Mission: The science of stars
Location: USS Wolff - Sickbay
Timeline: 5th march 2395

ON:

After spending the morning feeling a little uncomfortable Taliserra decided to call in at sickbay, as well as getting herself checked over she thought this would be a good chance to get a look at how the medical staff had taken the recent losses amongst the crew and their department.

Coming through the doors she greeted a couple of the nurses and then saw Lt Seleya nearby. "Good afternoon Lieutenant."

Seleya had finished checking their medical stocks and just as the captain walked in. She entered her report and was about to take to running diagnostics on the equipment before her usual appointments. She'd taken on the duties of CMO and could now appreciate all that Galatea went through. The captain's voice called her from her thoughts of her predecessor, a woman she had much in common with.

"Captain, are you alright?"

"Just an upset stomach I think, nothing too bad." Taliserra replied.

She motioned for the Captain to sit on the bio bed and picked up her tricorder removing the probe. The high pitched sound of the device began picking up the captain's readings. "Yes. There is an inflammation of the stomach lining. It is a side effect of the outbreak. Although highly unpleasant it is a sign that your system is fighting to return to normal. If you will permit me I will give you a hypo that will assist."

"Go ahead." Taliserra said and watched as Seleya moved off to fetch a hypo. "Are you and your staff alright? these last few weeks have been very hard you all."

Seleya returned with a small vial and hypo. She set the dose pressed the vile into the hypo and applied it to the captain's neck letting it slowly hiss out the dose.

When that was done she turned to the CO. "The department is adjusting. The staff is...in a phase that humans call mourning. The loss of Doctor Polaris was difficult. I have relieved Nurse Payton of duty temporarily as he was most effected. While the department moral is considerably low and while the drop in effectiveness and motivation is more the 20% there is still enough functionality for proper patient care. I have taken on extra shifts to allow the staff time to adjust to the loss of Doctor Polaris."

"I know the two of you were close, and Galatea had been with us for quite a while. The whole ship is feeling it."

She was quiet uncomfortable discussing her feelings. Galatea was the only one that she connected with really on the ship. She held back a sign. "She was .... a mentor and friend. I must say I dislike become a CMO in this sense however it is necessary. Vulcans see death as a logical outcome of life however I am .... processing her loss as well. It has not affected my ability to function." She closed the tricorder. "It will take approximately 32.5 minutes for the medication to take effect. She thought a moment. "I am afraid I do not have a counseling degree like Doctor Polaris but if you wish to speak I will listen. Are you coping well emotionally?"

"I don't know," Taliserra sighed slightly. "We lost a third of the old crew less than a year ago and now in my second mission as a Captain I lost another 20 to something I had no ability to do anything about."

Seleya tilted her head. "And you blame yourself for this?" She studied the woman. "That is illogical. You did nothing wrong. As a Starfleet captain these are all the possibilities of command."

"I could have had the ambassador and their aides things scanned and searched more thoroughly but that wouldn't have been diplomatic." Taliserra countered.

She tilted her head. "It would not have been diplomatic nor would it have been in line with Starfleet protocols." She paused a moment. "No captain is born knowing when to break the rules and when not to break them. That will come with time. Do not be hard on yourself."

"I know I shouldn't. I know I'll get my head around things better eventually but this has not been a very good start to my command career." Taliserra replied.

"No. It has not." She tilted her head. "Easy starts are rather few. I remember reading that Captain Picard had a rough start with the Q, and Captain Kirk had a rough start, and Captain Sisko, also Captain Morris, and Thompson, and Janeway. It appears that all the great captains had rough starts." She studied the woman.

Taliserra smiled slightly, she knew the adventures of the Captains Seleya mentioned "And I have the advantage over some of them, I've spent nearly my entire career on the same ship, not having to find ways to ingratiate myself with the other crew as most of them already know me."

Seleya gave a nod. "Of course. Therefore you have a stronger chance. It is only logical." She used her tricorder to take a few more readings. "Alright. How does your stomach feel?"

"A little better," Taliserra replied. "it has stopped rumbling."

"Excellent. Captain I do have a question," she said.

"Go right ahead and ask doctor, what's on your mind?"

She sighed, "When will you be requesting a new CMO to join the ship?" She needed to know if this was permanent or if she would be preparing the bay for another doctor.

Taliserra was expecting a question along those lines. "I hadn't thought about it yet, for now the position is yours but I will think about it and let you know."

She inclined her head. She didn't like uncertainties. That meant she'd have to prepare for a new CMO and implement her own changes. It would be a lot of work but she would have no choice. "You should be feeling better soon Captain." She motioned to the wall read outs. "All else is normal. The readings are stable."

"Thank you doctor." Taliserra was about to drop off the biobed when she stopped. "Could you check my isoboramine levels? it feels like Tigran is a little uncomfortable."

"Of course." She picked up her tricorder and took the readings. "Hm...they are down a little. It is not at a concerning level yet but I would like to monitor it." She closed the tricorder and picked up a PADD. "Tell me have you had any symptoms, dizziness unusual sleepiness?"

"A few headaches and a more than usual amount of dreams related to memories that aren't mine." Taliserra replied. "And as strange as it sounds a few dreams like that are usual."

Seleya sighed, "Very well. Captain I want to monitor things. I need you to return here every two days. I also would like your permission to have the computer monitor your isoboramine levels and alert me to any drastic changes."

"That's fine, I expected something like that." Taliserra said nodding slightly and dropped off the biobed.

She gave a nod. "Very well. I shall see you in two days pending any drastic changes."

"I'l try not to make you have to drag me here doctor." Taliserra chuckled slightly as she headed for the door.
