Mission:
The science of stars
Location: Shuttlebay
Timeline: 9th March 2395 1100hrs
ON:
With the briefing over, Brendon detached himself from the wall and approached Lt. Yuvek. "Looks like we're going to be getting into Papa Bear's porridge together, sir," he offered with a smile as he extended his hand. "I'm Brendon Watanabe, stellar cartography."
Lt. Yuvek gave a quizzocal glare towards the Ensign. He still did not understand the Human fascination of naming the planets after animals and and parental units.
"What. . .is. . .porridge, Ensign?" The Cardassian asked. Before the Officer had the chance to respond, Lt. Yuvek waived the inquiry away. "Nevermind, I probably won't understand it." He said as he handed a padd to him.
"Here are the flight restrictions that I came up with for the trip down to the surface. Review them with your team to determine what adjustments will need to be made for your equipment." He said directly. "I'll need to account for what effects the radiation will have on our entry and exit from the planet surface." He said matter-of-factly.
Despite Yuvek waving off the question, Brendon answers it anyhow. "Earth food, starchy grains, mostly oats boiled in water or milk. My mother made it with milk when I was growing up, great with brown sugar, the replicators have the pattern if you ever want to try it."
Then the ensign got down to business, taking the PADD in hand and reviewing the restrictions. "These make sense, sir, we'll try not to make your job too difficult. Do you have any recommendations on who you'd like to join the mission, I know Petty Officer Payton was mentioned, and personally I'd like Ensign Cross our geologist along for my science team."
"Very well, summon them both and have them prepare their necessary equipment." Lt. Yuvek said, still not impressed with the Human's fascination with animals and foods given to children.
"We'll also need security escorts as well, I'll contact Security and inform them to send down the necessary officers." Lt. Yuvek said, standing up and walking to the nearby comm unit.
=/\=Lt. Yuvek to Security, please send down two Security personnel to Shuttle Bay 4 for in-mission briefing.=/\= He said. He really wasn't too concerned about who was sent, just that they were competent.
=/\= On the way Lieutenant. =/\= Came a response.
Jasad reviewed the mission operation order as he updated the file regarding who all would be participating. As the officer in charge, Jasad was looking for the opportunity to take command of a mission, especially a mission to an otherwise unexplored planet.
=/\=Watanabe to Cross, you're needed in Shuttlebay 4 for a mission briefing =/\= With that done and Hunter summoned by Yuvek there's nothing to do but wait for the others to arrive.
Hunter stormed out of the sickbay before he said anything else that might get him booted off the ship. He'd been rude to Seleya, what he'd said was horrible, it even bordered on insubordination but he was angry and then Elijah had to walk in. He was aching to take that man to the cleaners. He tried to walk off his anger taking a moment to himself. Alas that did not work out as planned the com chirped calling him.
=/\=Lt. Yuvek to Chief Petty Officer Hunter, please report to Shuttle Bay 4. You'll be accompanying my team on an away mission. =/\= He said.
Hunter wanted to respond one way but simply tapped his com badge and said, "Acknowledged." He sighed and headed to the secondary bay to get some medical supplies. He headed after that to the shuttle bay not knowing what to expect.
===== Shuttle bay ====
Amanda passed through the double doors into the shuttle bay and looked for Lt Yuvek, as the only Cardassian onboard he wasn't hard to find; stood near one of the Volga runabouts with one of the scientists. "Lieutenant, Ensign." She said as she approached
Nicola was only a few steps behind Amanda, she was looking forwards to some time planetside and a chance to use her knowledge.
Hunter entered ready for his away team mission. He'd have to wait to sort things out with Seleya when he got back. Class L planet if he read correctly. This would be a treat.
"Ensign, Chief," Watanabe greeted each as they arrived. "We're just going over what we'll need for the survey of Papa Bear, the Class L planet. We've already got rad suits, an I understand we'll be needing injections as well as a precaution." That last came with a look to Hunter to confirm.
"We will." He sighed. "Doctor Seleya has reviewed all your files and I've prepared the doses based on weight and age." He held up a box he'd picked up. Opening it he loaded a hypo. "Alright. This is painless." He inoculated the Ensign and then Watanabe. Within a few minutes he was done. It took longer as the medication had to hiss out its dose slowly. He finally gave himself a dose. The truth was he was excited about the opportunity to get out. He sighed. "Alright we're ready. I will maintain a bio read out on all of you. The shuttle...has it been re-calibrated with the extra precautions?"
Lt. Yuvek walked over to the box and took a hypo. He pressed it to his neck and waited several moments for the dosage to work its way through his system. It took several more moments for his vision to clear as his body became accustomed to the anti-radiation inoculations.
"I've inputted the necessary parameters into the shuttle." Lt. Yuvek said as he shared the information from his padd to the other crew members.
"What are we expecting down there?" Amanda asked.
"It's a pre-warp civilization, I'd be shocked if they had any recognition of flight let alone space travel." Lt. Yuvek said dismissively. He did not expect the population to be much of a factor to the mission since they had not even developed the ability to travel faster than the speed of light. Other than simple scientific curiosity, the Helmsman questioned what actual benefit could they provide.
"Do we even know just how far behind these people are?" The Cardassian added.
"If there is even anyone or anything down on the class L planet," Nicola replied. "the amount of radiation hitting that planet would make long term settlement almost impossible."
Hunter finished inoculating the rest of the group while they talked. Even though Yuvek assured him that all was well with the shuttle Hunter felt that Yuvek rubbed him the wrong way. I mean to just walk up an inoculate yourself. He was there to make sure the dosing was proper. He hung back letting the rest of the team finish up their plan. He listened to Nicola talk. "You are correct," he told her. "Chances are next to zero that there is anything or anyone there. This will be a short trip."
"Good" Lt. Yuvek said as he tapped on a nearby terminal. "The last thing we need is to spend too much time with a cave-dwellers." He said pointedly.
"Hunter, how long will your inoculation last? I don't want us to be in the middle of a mission and some of the crew members begin to fall victim to radiation effects." Yuvek said. He was confident that as a Cardassian he'd be able to withstand the effects longer than some of the Humans; however, he wanted to avoid any problems before they occurred.
"The inoculations will last a week for each person. I have brought extra and medical is sending a medical tent that will hook up to the bio domes. I have all the equipment to maintain the inoculations and have brought extra should anything happen."
Hunter looked around and continued, "I will also have a monitor on each of you to see levels of radiation and to make sure the inoculations are doing their job. If I call you into the bio tents medical portion you come in. No complaints and fussing." He held up a box. "If you will please line up. Those of you who have received the shot first and I will give you these bracelets that will let me monitor you and those who need inoculations to the back so you can be inoculated."
Watanabe had been distracted by downloading the latest sensor data to his PADD looks up. "Oh, I wouldn't say this would be a quick trip, the radiation is skewing our readings at this range but there does seem to be some interesting geological readings."
Cross the team's geologist, who had stood mostly silent until then nodded, "Yes, quite a few interesting readings, I know it's not as sexy as new life and new civilizations, but, it's worth checking out in detail. I mean who knows how long it will be until someone is out here again."
Hunter excused himself, "If you will excuse me I want to check the medical gear one more time."
"I will go and prep some weapons." Amanda quickly followed Hunter, while she could get type II phasers for everyone from a nearby locker she wanted to go fetch her rifle from the armory. She hoped that the radiation bombarding the planet wouldn't render the phasers useless but made a mental note to pack some modification tooling just to be sure.
"Ens. Turrell," Lt. Yuvek said as he looked at the probe's readings on the radiation readings on the planet surface. "If the radiation on that planet surface is strong enough for us to need injections, there is a strong possibility that it will render phasers useless, or at the very least significantly their functionality." He said as he turned towards the Security Officer.
"I want options on what else can be used on the planet surface other than standard phasers. I'm not sure what to expect from the inhabitants on the planet, but I plan on walking off that planet alive." He said.
"Understood." Amanda said and carried on out the shuttle bay, she smiled glad that the head of the away team and here were on the same page and that 'options' usually meant projectile weapons and she liked them. As if by magic the moment she got to the same deck as the armoury the Padd in her pocket pinged with a message from Gabriel "Simulations run, radiation has a 5% chance to cause phase energy weapons to be inoperative. Special armament authorized, locker three. Dont shoot yourself in the foot."
Smiling even wider Amanda jogged the remaining distance to the armoury, passed through the security door and grabbed the container from locker three. Eager to see what Gabe had given her she checked the contents, the usual stuff was there, a typeII for everyone, survival knives and several phaser power packs but he must have known that Amanda was on the away team as her personalised typeIV phaser rifle also sat in the container. A big surprise to her though was the 'special armament' instead of a Tr-116 or something similar she was expecting, Gabriels M1 Garand rifle and several packages of ammunition sat in a padded section.
Fastenning the container back up she headed back to the shuttle bay.
"Is there anything else that you can think of before we start to load up?" Lt. Yuvek asked the gathered crewman. He was eager to get underway.
Watanabe shook his head. "I think we're about set, sir. Cross and I will check over our equipment and then we should be good to go."
Hunter walked back to the group. "Medical checked and ready."
"Security and survival gear is all here." Amanda said as she approached the runabout and caught Hunter giving his report.
"I reckon I have everything I'm going to need." Nicola reported.
Hunter was anxious to get off the ship. Maybe he'd get lucky and join Galatea wherever she was. His heart was breaking. He needed her back. He cleared his throat, suddenly finding a lump there.
"Sounds like we're ready to go sir," Watanabe reported with a look given to Yusad. "Just say the word."
The Cardassia nodded. "Good, let's get everything loaded up. I'll notify the bridge that we will be departing in the next five minutes." He said quickly as he made his way towards the cabin of the runabout.
