1,413 words; about a 7 minute read

Mission: The science of stars
Location: Counselor's Office

ON:

Seleya walked down the counselor's office. She waited several minutes. She had been just about to walk away when the door opened. "Hello counselor." She said automatically.

When the doors opened, Doctor Deepak found himself face to face with Doctor Seleya. "Doctor," he said with a soft welcoming tone. "Fancy seeing you here. Were you looking for me?"

Her urge to say no was strong but she didn't like to lie. "Yes...I did not want to but yes." She thought a moment as if getting the words out was hard. "I require your assistance. If you are occupied I can come at a later time." She was hoping he was busy so she could run away and forget the matter.

"You did not want to come looking for me, but you needed me?" he replied, echoing what she had said. He smiled and shook his head. "Yeah, that summarizes my job description quite nicely" he jested.

"Doctor, I'm the Ship's Counselor. I'm always busy at not being busy because people avoid me like the plague" he added. "It's like pulling teeth around here to get any of them to open up and discuss their emotions which is ironic given the highly emotional nature of humans of which there is a majority population of serving aboard."

"Yes...I believe I was attempting that as well. It failed."

He looked at her amused by what she said. "Colour me intrigued" he said with a bit of a smirk. "You came here for a reason and yet you were trying to avoid me? If that is so then there most certainly is something on your mind. I suspect this is entirely unrelated to the Chief Peyton incident?"

She looked down in the carpet suddenly interested in the threads. "Yes...logical deduction."

Looking empathetic, Deepak El-Azar gestured her to come in and make herself at home. "Come, dear Doctor. Come on in and let's have some tea. My door is always open for you."

She entered somewhat slowly but she did enter. She gave a nod to Deepak. "Perhaps peppermint tea?"

He gestured towards the replicator. "What's mine is yours, Doctor. We are budding colleagues after all...practically two peas in a pod. Scientists, physicians, explorers, two aliens on a ship packed with irrational and illogical emotion-driven humans."

"Yes...there is that." She ordered a tea and sat herself down rather stiffly. "I.... am disturbed by an observation a crew member made."

"Well, paint me periwinkle" replied Deepak with a small smirk. "An observation made by a crew member disturbed you? That would potentially suggest that the observation was perhaps about you, Doctor? What happened? Did someone say you were acting illogically?"

"No. The...assistant chief security officer believes I am attracted to him."

Deepak was glad he had been seated for this as the tea would have been spilled in more than the metaphorical sense. He eagerly leaned forward wanting to hear more. "

Oh? Samson?" he said remembering the man's last name. "Well, you know what they say about a man who plays tuba and collects knives...ah well I don't know either, but I'm intrigued at the possibilities" added Deepak.

"Doctor, do tell me...do you believe he is correct or is his emotional inmaturity clouding his judgment?" asked the counselor.

"No, not Samson... Elijah Alexander." She paused. She shifted somewhat uncomfortably. "I...do not understand why he's made the observation," she said by way of side step.

"Oh right. Right. Alexander is the Assistant Security Chief" Deepak replied after the correction. He had to admit that he was still pairing names to faces. "That's the one with the long dark hair and that scar right here" added the counselor running his index finger through one of his brows.

Deepak smiled "I do not know him well, but he is rather statuesque" stated Deepak. "Betazoid if I remember correctly. They are always picking up on emotions...which I know you're a Vulcan and one that I suspect sticks to Surak's philosophies?"

"I make every attempt to, yes." She took a sip from her drink. "He is Betazoid." She confirmed again. It was...unusual for her to be talking like this with the counselor. She was starting to question why she came.

Deepak looked at the Vulcan. "If you are not interested in pursuing him romantically, sexually, or what have you, then simply do not," he said firmly. "I am certainly not a prude. So, if he wishes to come to see me, my door is always open...figuratively of course. The Captain says I can't take the door out. I wanted to of course, but most importantly if you are not interested then politely inform your gentlemen that his services are not needed. This is the 24th century and nobody needs to yield to unwanted advances."

She shifted in her chair. "That is the issue doctor. I do not know what I wish."

"Then you are...conflicted about this" replied Deepak. "Normally, I would consult the Chief Medical Officer about this, but seeing as you are The Chief Medical Officer...pardon my bluntness. Are you in the begining stages of your Pon Farr cycle, Doctor?"

She shook her head. "I have not yet had a first cycle. I can assure you that is not the issue." She said in a matter of fact manner.

Deepak smiled. "Well, then that does make things easier. It means your judgement won't be swayed by emotions" added the Counselor.

The phrase 'I am Vulcan' came to mind. That didn't fit because they were talking about something that, for Vulcans, was emotional. "I am unsure in this matter. I do not think he is right, however, I do find him intriguing. His .... persistence is most interesting."

"Well, I've met my fair share of Vulcans. They are individuals. So, I cannot group you all together and I wont" he replied. "However, your species has a tendency to see things in a way that most humanoid species would not. Perhaps, it is not any romantic feelings that you have towards him, but scientific curiosity. You want to observe his behavior."

She raised a delicate eyebrow. "That makes him sound like a lab experiment." He wasn't that though. She was fascinated by him but also he effected her. "I...He is convinced that he wishes me to be his mate yet that is impossible."

"I'm not exactly sure how you perceive him, Doctor" admitted Deepak. "I could try to pry into your mind if you wanted, but that's risky business and last time a Vulcan tried to mind-meld with me, he ended up a hot emotional mess and I'm pretty sure I'm unofficially banned from Vulcan" he added.

Deepak smiled. "You are the Chief Medical Officer of this starship and I am the Counselor. If he's a bother, we can make his life miserable" teased Deepak.

She stood and before she could pace she sat back down. "I must admit I might be allergic to him. When he is around I notice that it has a physical effect on me. Elevated blood pressure, my heart rate speeds up. Vulcans do not sweat yet my palms do. Allergy?" It was an obvious question.

The Counselor smirked "Well, if you were human, Doctor, I would say that was a strong indicator that there was some sort of sexual attraction...if you were human of course" he replied. "You may want to run some tests on yourself after being in his presence and look at your dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin levels."

She stayed silent a moment. "I see. " She paused again. "Is that your final theory?"

"Consider it more of a friendly observation, Doctor" he said with a pleasant smile. "You're a Vulcan. I value the logic your species presents, but sometimes your species has a tendency to ignore what is right in front of them...for one reason or another" he added.

"Well that is true enough. I shall have the computer monitor my vitals." She stood. "Thank you counselor. Most enlightening session."

Deepak smiled "Any time, Doctor. I will always be here with my door open for you or this crew."

She gave a nod and headed out. It was a good session, as far as these things went.

I look forward to seeing how this goes thought Deepak to himself.
