Something is not quite right

450 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: The Silent Scream
Location: Deck 13 jefferies tubes
Timeline: 9th April 2395 0200hrs

As Crewman Jenson crawled through the jefferies tube he heard a clunking sound coming from near the junction up ahead. It was mid gamma shift and to his knowledge no one had work in this area of the ship apart from him.

Cautiously he crawled closer pausing when he heard something else; a female voice talking, he stayed there listening for a minute. Something seemed strange, whoever it was didn't appear to be talking to someone or if they were they weren't talking back the whole conversation seemed one sided.

Something in the voice sounded familiar so he eventually decided just to go for it and quickly covered the last few meters to the junction. He saw the lower half of a body protuding from deep inside a conduit junction.

"Ensign Larson? what are you doing down here?" He asked as the owner of the lower half came back up, the young Ensign wasn't in a uniform or even engineering coveralls, just some leggings and a t-shirt.

"Oh hi Jenson," Debbie replied looking back up at him. "Just working on a job."

Jenson looked a little confused "But your shift finished like 9 hours ago, shouldn't you be trying to relax and get some sleep?"

"Oh I should be but I lay there wide awake thinking about this problem, didn't want to leave it for you night shifters so thought I'd come back and have another crack at it."

"Oh, alright." Jenson remarked huffing slightly. He knew she was a hard worker but coming back long after your shift finished to keep working on a job was a bit much. "What are you working on anyway?" he'd not seen any jobs on the board for this area of the ship.

"There's a 0.4% power drain somewhere along the feed to the starboard nacelle." Debbie replied. "Haven't found it yet, but I will."

"0.4%? That's well within tolerance...." He was about to add 'you know' but he was certain Debbie knew that, of all the Wolff's engineers she had the most experience of the ship.

"I had it down to 0.05% before we went back to 54, a team came onboard to do some updates while we were there. One of them must have busted something."

"You need any help?"

"Nah, I'm good." Debbie replied. "I'll figure it out in the end."

"Alright, just be sure to get some rest at some point, boss won't be happy if you're on shift half asleep." Jenson said and climbed into the tube on the other side of the junction. "I'm on a job 4 sections further along if you decide you do need some help." He added before dissappearing down the tube.
