1,204 words; about a 6 minute read
Mission:
To catch a thief
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: immediately following 'in the nick of time'
ON:
Gabe had Amanda's arm over his neck with an almost protective arm wrapped around her back. As the sickbay solidified around them his eyes locked onto the Nurse coming towards them.
Nurse Jun Zhao rushed forward tricorder in hand. "Lets get her up on the bio bed."
Gabe shifted his hold on her, slipping the arm from around Amanda's back to behind her shoulders. He then twisted slipped the other arm behind her knees and lifted her easily in his arms to take her to the bio bed, making sure to pay attention to her wounded shoulder and not jostle her over much.
"Get her armour off," She said to Gabe knowing he'd have a better idea how it came off than she did. "I can get to the wound but it's easier without it." She started to cut away parts of Amanda's uniform to get easier access.
Gabe grunted, and his fingers tapped the emergency release button which retracted the connectors into the chest of the vest. He then grabbed it and tossed it to the floor.
"I can get the back part of the vest out but it will require Ensign Turell to sit up or one of us to lift her up. Can you work around it or do you require it, too, to be removed?" Gabe asked simply, compartmentalizing the tightness in his chest as the adrenaline and drug mix was starting to wear off.
"That'll do for now," Jun replied. "Get yourself a seat too Petty Officer, we'll get you checked out."
Gabe grunted, turned and growled as his legs went out from under him as he pitched himself up onto the biobed. He grunted again as he pressed the control to detach his armor and both pieces sloughed off of him as he pulled himself up fully onto the bed. As he came to a rest his body slumped against the bed and he drifted into blessed unconsciousness.
"Chief? Chief?" Jun called out to him but got no response. "Cameron! I need you out here."
Ensign Kore came running from another area of the sickbay. "Yes Jun?" She said before seeing the scene in front of her.
"Check on the Chief over there, he was responding a moment ago." Jun replied before turning back to Amanda. "Computer activate Emh."
Cameron grabbed a tricorder and rushed over to the bio bed where Gabe lay.
The tricorder showed Gabe had a high dose of a triple acting pain killer as well as the signs of high adrenaline drop-off. His heart rate was elevated and blood pressure was low.
"Jeez Chief, they gave you a combat shot?" She asked after reviewing the results. She'd read about them but had never treated someone who'd had one before. Designed to get someone back on their feet for a while longer but when it wore off you'd be in a bad state.
Cameron grabbed a hypospray and injected Gabe with both a cardiovascular and metabolic stabilizer to help bring his heart rate back down to a more reasonable level and begin to control the chemical imbalance that the massive dose of painkillers and stimulants had caused in his system.
Slowly but surely the drugs began to take effect and the biobeds readouts began to resemble something a little more normal. When Gabe regained consciousness and opened his eyes Cameron put her hand on his shoulder and gave him a reassuring smile, "Get some rest chief." she said before giving him a mild sedative.
=== Meanwhile ===
The young female human form of Emma the Wolff's Emh flashed into life a moment later. "Please state the... oh my." she said in her always chirpy voice after taking the situation, Amanda's already dark uniform was stained darker with her blood and it was starting to soak into the fabric of the bio bed.
"Disruptor shot to the shoulder, joint is damaged but intact, heavy blood loss." Jun handed Emma the tricorder she'd used so she could assess the scans for herself.
"She'll need surgery, quickly." Emma said after a very brief look at the tricorder
"I agree," Jun left to fetch a gurney to move Amanda to surgery returning a moment later. "Computer run sterilization program on surgical bay one."
"Program underway." The computer responded.
"Take her legs Jun." Emma said, she slipped her hands under Amanda's back and they lifted her onto the gurney.
Emma calmly ran ahead into the surgical bay to prepare while Jun pushed the grav gurney towards the room. She prepped the surgical frame with the drugs she would need and set the blood synthesizer to produce several pints of Amanda's blood type to replace the considerable amount she had lost.
Jun bought Amanda in and together they moved her onto the surgical bed and fixed the surgical frame over her.
"Start blood transfusion." Emma instructed as she began to microsuture Amanda back together, together with a vascular regenerator she was gradually able to stop the bleeding but it had taken some time.
Jun watched the biobed readouts on Amanda's condition as Emma worked, slowly they returned to normal levels. "Heart rate and blood pressure are stabilising, breathing is normal." With Amanda no longer in danger of dying she let out a sigh of relief. "Good work Emma."
"She has a long way to go yet, but she's out of the worst." Emma replied not looking away from her patient. "Osteo-regenerator."
With the regenerator she set to work repairing the numerous small fractures the disruptor bolt had caused in Amanda's shoulder. "She has been extremely lucky." Emma remarked.
"I agree there, much closer to the joint and she might have needed a new shoulder, and I don't think she would have liked that even though it might be the best thing for her." Jun told Emma.
"Does she have a history of arm and shoulder problems?" Emma asked, she'd not read through the medical history of the current crew in some time.
"I think it was her sister that managed to do some serious damage to her right arm and shoulder," Jun paused for a moment to recheck the readouts on the surgical frame. "play fighting when they were younger, it was repaired but she is fairly prone to dislocations."
"That is unfortunate." Emma stood up straight and stepped back slightly from Amanda, "A quick wave with the dermal regenerator and we are done, I couldn't see any fragments of clothing in the wound but there could be minute pieces so administer 10cc's of corophizine every 12 hours for the next few days."
"Understood."
Emma looked up and it seemed like a switch was flipped. The all duty focus she had while working on her patient melted away and the chipper personality reasserted itself, with a bright smile she bounced a little.
"Now, all we have to do is let her body get to work healing itself." she said through her toothy grin as she cast an eye over the biobed readouts. "We can move her from surgery to recovery now."
