Summer and Ash

1,015 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: A marathon not a sprint
Location: Summer’s Quarters

ON:

Ash cleared her throat before pressing the chime of the Counsellor's door. Not that she was coming to see her in that capacity. With the First Officer suddenly gone, her thoughts had gone to Summer. She remembered the warmth she'd felt from the woman when she'd talked about him. And she had to be feeling his absence.

Summer answered the door with a warm smile. “Hello Ash, please come in” She motioned for Ash to enter as she moved away from the door. “Make yourself at home.”

"Thanks," Ash gave a small smile as she moved for a seat, unable to help herself in glancing around the quarters. Curiosity always got the better of her in other people's homes. "I..." she paused, taking a moment to decide what best to say...before falling back to her Betazoid instincts and going for the blunt route. "I thought it might not be easy for you...with the First Officer staying behind."

“It wasn’t at first” Summer nodded as she moved across to the sofa and sat down. “I should explain...I’m pregnant.” She offered a smile. “I wasn’t sure at first if I should tell Ty, but having spoken to him he’s happy about it! He wants to try to get back to the ship to us once he’s sorted things. Which I’m really hoping he manages to do.”

"Oh...oh!" Ash watched her with wide eyes, grinning as she reached out to grip her arm warmly. "Congratulations...that's beautiful news," she said warmly, shaking her head with awe. "Wow, Summer, all the things are going on for you right now!"

“Tell me about it!” Summer offered a warm smile. “I’m lucky to have a man like Ty, and good friends as well. It’s easier knowing I have people I can rely on if I need them.”

Ash nodded with understanding, but still watched her with awe as she shook her head. "It's not easy being apart, but there's loads of power couples across the fleet. I know you'll make it work."

“I really hope so Ash.” Summer offered a warm smile. “It’s all a learning curve from here on in.”

"Well you seem a smart woman, I'd bet on you to do it well," Ash assured with a soft chuckle, shaking her head as she watched her with awe. Bringing a new life into the world. A little piece of joy, it was pretty special. "You've seen the doc, right?"

Summer nodded. “I have, I needed to check I was right with my facts and figures. Being a hybrid pregnancy there could be risks involved, but Hope has reassured me that she’ll keep a close eye on us.”

"Oh, of course," Ash nodded with a slight frown of concern, clearly not having thought on that aspect of it. She'd heard enough scuttlebutt to know that Acevedo was Ardanan, but not much more. "I don't know much about Ardanans...?"

“Me either to be honest” Summer gave a shrug of her shoulders. “I always figured I’d have plenty of time to ask Ty about his people, I guess I should have asked sooner. I fully intend to find out though.”

"Hey, you and the little one can figure it out together," Ash replied with a warm smile at the idea, chuckling as she shook her head gently. "You know, if there's anything I can do at any point, just let me know? I...try to stay out of other people's heads so...you'll need to flag me down."

Summer nodded. “That’s very kind of you Ash, I appreciate it.” She smiled warmly. “You’re always welcome to drop by anytime, it’s nice to have friends.”

"Thanks, that'd be nice," Ash admitted with a soft chuckle. She hadn't thought of having children herself. It just didn't seem to fit with her lifestyle or identity. But she still thought the tenacious little things were pretty miraculous. "How did the Captain take it?" she asked softly, assuming they wouldn't even be having this conversation if she hadn't already told her.

“Well I dropped the bomb on her at the briefing, I haven’t had chance to speak to her privately about it yet.” Summer paused, she should have been to see Taliserra already. “I’ll make a point of talking to her as soon as possible.”

"Oh, I can let you get on then," Ash assured quickly, shaking her head as she stood, her hands unconsciously smoothing her top down. "Let's meet up for lunch or something though. I want to hear every little detail."

Summer grinned. “Sounds good to me, you don’t need to rush off though I’m not rushing you out or anything.”

"You sure?" Ash asked with a half smile, shrugging as she shook her head gently. "I don't mind if you want to get that out of the way. I haven't really had many run ins with a Captain before, but I bet it's like having to 'fess up to a parent."

“That’s as good an explanation as I’ve heard” Summer grinned. “I guess I should be going to talk to her.”

Ash nodded with understanding, smiling gently as she walked with her towards the door. "Let's lunch tomorrow though. If you're feeling up to it?" she asked. Not having experienced pregnancy herself, she wasn't entirely sure how she'd be feeling...besides the often talked about morning sickness of course. But that was pretty much the extent of her knowledge.

“I’d like that” Summer nodded. “Hopefully I’ll have a have my stomach settled by then, if not it’ll be a very light lunch.”

"Whatever suits you," Ash assured firmly, reaching to squeeze her arm before heading out to let her get to the Captain. She wasn't concerned about her anymore at least, but wow, that had taken a turn she had not been expecting.

Watching Ash go Summer smiled to herself, she had a good friend there and she considered herself lucky to do so.
