Mission:
A marathon not a sprint
Location: Lounge
Timeline: After Summer and Ash
Summer arrived in the lounge looking around she didn’t yet see Magnus, walking over to the bar she ordered herself a lemonade and some food. Heading over to her favourite table, which had a view of the stars, she settled down to await her order and Magnus as well.
Magnus saw her and ordered something to eat as well before he went over to her table, taking a seat. "Good day?" he asked, smiling as he met her eyes.
“Pretty much” Summer nodded and smiled. “I called Ty, told him the news.” Her smile said it all. “He’s happy he's going to be a father! He said he’d try and get back to the ship once he’s resolved matters on Risa.”
He smiled at the words, nodding as he felt relief. Good. He suspected Ty would be pleased. "I'm glad," he said, because she would know how he felt. "And how are you feeling?"
“Actually I’m feeling pretty excited!” Summer grinned. “I do have to be cautious at the same time though, with our mixed genetics and the baby being a hybrid, this could turn out to be a risky pregnancy. I just have to let Hope know if I have any worries or problems.”
He listened to her words, realising the concerns she might have. He had never thought about it; how it would work between two species. "I'm sure there's ways to reduce the risks?"
“I guess so too” Summer nodded. “I’m doing lots of reading on what to expect during pregnancy, though not everything goes like a text book says it should.” She smiled. “I’ll just go with the flow I guess” she smiled warmly as their food orders arrived, her mixed nutrition filled platter containing a large mixed salad, with ham, cheese & crackers, plus a yogurt for dessert. “Hmmm lovely.”
"A lot of things are subjective. I'll say though...your experience will be unique to you," he said and smiled as his wholegrain crispbreads with sliced cheese, cooked but cold sliced vegetables and a glass of what looked like a thick milk arrived. "Thank you."
Summer smiled hand nodded as she tucked politely into her food, she was savouring every morsel of every bite. “Very true, every woman’s experience is unique to them. As mine will be to me.”
He smiled as he ate, using his fingers as he watched her. "You will need to eat well," he said, thoughtfully. "I remember when a cousin of mine was with child. She had the strangest cravings. Raw fish. And cloudberries, and cream. On the same plate..." he chuckled warmly at the memory.
“Really? All that on one plate?” Summer couldn’t help but grin. “I wonder what mine will be? I’m trying to eat as healthy and varied a diet as I can.” She couldn’t help but grin as she picked up some more salad and started eating.
"Grains, nuts, berries...protein..." he listed, his eyes warm as he watched her. "There's a lot of food I did not know before I came to Starfleet. Not...dishes not from Earth. Earth dishes that I could never have imagined. Deep fried things, for instance."
“They’d call deep fried unhealthy” Summer smiled. “But I have to admit I like it! Next time we get Shoreleave I’m aiming to tuck into some real meat, replicators are okay but you can’t beat the real thing for flavour!” Her stomach rumbled. “See what I mean? Makes me hungry just thinking about it!”
He smiled, shaking his head as he considered it. "One day, you should visit where I am from. We have a festival where we let outsiders in...after all, tourism generates goodwill, and my people need it to trade for some supplies they can't come by themselves."
“I’d like that” Summer nodded her head enthusiastically. “I’d like to hear all about your home-world.”
"Oh...it's..." Magnus chuckled at the words, shaking his head. "Earth most people know. My...home is just...an island. Isolated. Cold. Beautiful."
Summer blushed at her faux pas. “Sorry that’s force of habit! Asking people about their home-world’s when they come to see me. I’d still like to see your island. I’ll admit I haven’t visited many places on Earth.”
"I'm not well travelled on other planets...trust me, I sure that if it wasn't for Starfleet Academy, few others would ever venture to Earth," Magnus said with a smile, having no illusions about humanity.
“Most likely very true” Summer nodded. “In my case I spent my childhood and teenage years going back and forth between Betazed and various Starbases and Starships, such is the Starfleet life. The main time I spent on Earth was when I attended the Academy. There are places on Earth I’d like to visit, I just haven’t gotten to it yet.”
"There's places in the universe I'd like to visit, and perhaps one day I shall," he said with a smile, picking up some cheese.
“Make What you Humans call a bucket list” Summer grinned. “A list of things you want to do, and places you want to go before you leave your mortal existence.” She paused to tuck into more of her food.
"I don't believe in having regrets," he admitted as he sipped his drink. "Besides, what happens once I finish the list? Do I lay down and close my eyes forevermore?"
Summer shrugged her shoulders. “I’ve absolutely no idea, it’s just something I heard of.”
"Well, you know...maybe we should do a...Spare Time list instead," Magnus said with a smile, watching her. "Things we want to try, whenever we are close enough to places that allow it. I went rock climbing on Risa. Maybe on Vulcan, I'd explore something new."
“That could be great fun!” Summer nodded. “Whilst I’m able anyway” she grinned. “I don’t think rock climbing is my thing though, I’ll have to have a think about what I’d like to do.”
"Oh, there's a lot. There's also crafts, for when you get to a stage where you may not feel up for doing anything too serious or strenuous, but still want to keep your hands busy," Magnus said with an encouraging smile.
“Funnily enough I’d like to learn to knit!” Summer smiled. “To be able to knit my own baby clothes would be lovely.”
He laughed, not at her saying it, but with delight that she had found something. "I wish I could help. I can't knit, I can...there's this way I was taught, with a needle and wool. But proper knitting...you should go to the holodeck, get someone there to teach you." He paused and snapped his fingers. "No, go to Engineering, find Hunnicutt. He knows how to knit, I've seen him do it."
“Really?” Summer was surprised. “I think he’d be pretty embarrassed if I walked in there and asked him to teach me to knit!” She grinned.
"I doubt he's ashamed of it. It is a true skill...a craft," Magnus said with a smile, holding her eyes. "Try it. He might surprise you."
Summer nodded. “Okay I will, but I’ll catch him at a quiet moment just to be fair.” She offered a smile.
"Good," Magnus chuckled, finishing his food. "And if you enjoy it, you can teach me. So you're spreading knowledge around."
Summer couldn’t help but grin. “You want to learn too? Now that is a surprise! I just don’t imagine men wanting to sit around knitting.”
He couldn't help but laugh at that, watching her with mild confusion. "Why not? Keeps the hands busy...although I suspect it takes more time than carving something out of wood. But hopefully, also leaves you with less cuts."
Summer grinned. “That’s very true, I guess we could knit together!”
"We could," he said before he held his hand up. "Although I suspect my first efforts would be dreadful...I look forward to trying it."
“You and me both!” Summer nodded. “It’ll be a learning curve for us both but it’ll be lots of fun.”
