1,646 words; about a 8 minute read

Mission: A marathon not a sprint
Location: Deck 6- counsellors office
Timeline: Md05 1440hrs

A deep breathing exercise that he had picked up along the way over the past several months had helped ease Tyrus’ mind, calmed his nerves, and readied him. He was going to be a father sooner than he had ever planned, and this time it was not at some sort of galactic seahorse ferrying an alien couple’s offspring through the absurd brilliance of fantastical science. This was going to be biologically his child, one that he and Summer Wyse had conceived before his leaving the Wolff. Ty sat in a chair, comfortably slumping down into it and holding a PaDD in hand. The small screen displayed the Federation logo as he waited for a subspace connection to establish. The benefits of being in the same quadrant as the Wolff and if he was correct, not awfully far away, just a few dozen star systems between them.

He waited for the woman’s face to appear. It had felt like forever since they touched and he could feel the warmth of her skin, to even just get a gentle wafting of the subtle aroma from the perfume she’d wear a subdued floral scent that was not pungent by any means. She was delicate in nearly every aspect, but mentally, as sharp and strong as they came. She was more than just a flimsy starship counselor, she was Summer Wyse.

“Summer,” he said in a breathy voice almost calling out to her in the idle void of the dark screen. It was as though he knew the instant she touched the device on her end of the quadrant. The connection between them even stronger now that he was going to be the father of their child, a bond that could never be broken no matter the distance between the stars or even if their relationship did not endure, the connection was everlasting and immortalized.

In the privacy of his own quarters with nobody around he could touch his fingers to his lips and gently brush them along the edge of the cool alloy composite that made the casing of the PaDD. When alone, away from the other men, he could let his guard down, let his emotions rise to the surface, and feel the warm embers of his heart yearn to be with her. “I miss you” he said immediately before she could even utter a greeting. As soon as her face appeared he got the first words in.

It had not even dawned on him that Summer may not have been alone. He was just glad that he was still wearing the black undershirt as his cheeks flushed a rosy pink shade, blushing when noticing the background on the screen was not her quarters and a face in the background were adorned with familiar spots. "I see you're with the Captain," Ty said.

Summer couldn’t help but smile at the greeting she got from Ty, she missed him just as much as he missed her and she couldn’t wait to be with him again. “That I am” She grinned as she motioned to Taliserra.

"Captain," he said addressing his former Commanding Officer. "It's been a little while" he added. The Wolff had progressed and moved on from where they had parted ways with him, and Ty had made some amendments to his request for a leave having extended it indefinitely by resigning his commission.

"Hello Ty." Taliserra said, she moved a little closer to where Summer sat so Ty could see her easier.

Ty couldn't help but feel a tingle of nostalgia. It had not been that long ago. Everything was still relatively fresh. "So, where are you off to?"

"The shipyard at Mazar." Taliserra replied. "Fleet wants us to pick up some things and take them somewhere else, you know how it is." Her last words were subtle clues that there was more but she couldn't tell him.

Playing it subtle he thought to himself. He could not blame her. He had been her First Officer, but that was not the capacity he was in any more. "Must be something decently important to task the Wolff with carrier duty, unless the Wolff is not ferrying a passenger or a cargo, but escorting it. Protection detail?"

He was had been more than just a starfleet officer after all. A successful career engineering officer that had been Taliserra's First Officer for a bit of time. He may not of had her level of clearance, but he had been read into things and latest intel before his departure. "I assume you have a new First Officer?"

Summer couldn’t help the melancholy look she gave Ty as he mentioned his old role. She wished he was back onboard with her.

"We do, he's just settling in." Taliserra replied.

Ty had noticed the expression on Summer's face. "Cheer up buttercup," he said trying to lift her spirits a bit. "Part of why I'm reaching out is because I've earned myself some time off. If we can arrange it, I'd like to spend it on the Wolff after you are done with your current assignment."

"It will take us quite a few weeks to get back anywhere near Risa Ty." Taliserra said, "Assuming we get the chance to come back that way."

Ty smirked and shook his head. "Captain, you underestimate my patience for sitting still" noted Ty. "I'm long gone from Risa" he added. "Tracked down the mother of my extra baggage and I'm no longer seahorsing."

He was looking at Summer curious what she had or had not told Taliserra. "I'm traveling space, doing my own thing and pulling my weight. Freighters and such."

"Have you tracked down the person that impregnated you?" Taliserra asked surprised that the man wasn't on Risa anymore, it hadn't been that long since they left him there.

"As I said," Ty smiled "All taken care of. I tracked the mother down. It's weird freaky science and medical stuff. Hope would be able to explain it better but the mother was a Xyrillians. She 'impregnated' as it were through physical touch."

Ty looked at Taliserra. "Not that kind of physical touch. It was just a massage. Regardless, she has her child thing again. Someone else can carry it."

“So will you be staying once you get here?” Summer gave Tyrus a hopeful look, she didn’t want to be apart from him for any longer than absolutely necessary.

He did not want to disappoint her and tried to soften the blow. "The important thing is I'll get to spend some time with you and our child," he prefaced. "I'll be able to stay for a little while, but I'll need to eventually get back to work; however, there's more flexibility in this than Starfleet."

Summer nodded a feeling of disappointment washing over her. “So you won’t be able to stay onboard full time.” Her smile faded somewhat.

"Living in the shadow of my replacement?" Ty looked at Summer and shrugged. "That wouldn't exactly work out so well. I know a kid can be a handful, and I plan to be a frequent visitor aboard, but I'd be so restless on the Wolff."

Summer nodded. “I guess I can understand that. Doesn’t mean I have to like it though.”

He thought it best to shift topics. "You said he's settling in, Taliserra? Who is he? When I'm aboard again I'd love to meet the guy."

"Jack Slattery," Taliserra told him. "Xo of the Ticonderoga before here, new Captain decided he didn't want him as Xo so he looked around for a new posting. Very short notice."

Ty nodded. "Well, they gave you me previously. Also short notice and freshly cleared from killing my Captain," stated Ty. There was a lot more detail to that, but Summer and Taliserra knew his whole ordeal and how his actions were necessary to save the crew.

"If you can put all that baggage aside and accept me, I'm sure Jack is in good hands. He can learn a lot from you. I certainly did" Ty added with a small smile. "Feel like my learning was cut a bit short, but I'm sure I'm not finished learning things from you."

"Couldn't teach you to stay away from female Xyrillian's though." Taliserra smiled slightly.

Ty sighed. "You are just lucky you aren't in a male host, Captain. One touch is all it takes and next thing you know, you are carrying an alien baby near your damn heart."

"I've had my fill of children from both sides of the fold Ty."

Summer watched the conversation with interest. “So, when will you be joining us? I know it won’t be just yet I’m just eager to see you in person.”

Ty smiled. "Oh as soon as possible. Maybe sooner than I think, but we'll find out. I'll keep in touch and let you both know what my plans are" he added indicating that he needed to go.

“Okay Ty” Summer nodded and offered a smile, hoping beyond hope that Ty would be arriving sooner rather than later.

"Keep in touch as best you can." Taliserra smiled too then there was silence for a few moments before the comm channel closed.

Summer offered Taliserra the best smile she could muster. “If you’ll excuse me Captain, I need some time to clear my head.” She smiled before heading on her way, hoping she’d see Tyrus again sooner rather than later.

"Of course Summer, take as long as you need." Taliserra said, she watched as the woman walked out of the office then waited a few moments longer before leaving the room herself heading back in the direction of her quarters.
