Mission:
A marathon not a sprint
Location: Security office,deck 8
ON:
O'Sullivan was going through the crew rotations and readiness reports, having arrived a few hours earlier on the ship. He stood up as a young Bajoran Enlisted woman entered.
"Petty Officer Jaarre? I'm O'Sullivan, new to the ship. I am missing the fitness reports of Smith, T'kar and Jevar from your detail and I kind of need them now. Also, I can't find the report on the phasers on deck 10, I know those science geeks are not expected to fire a phaser, but I still need to know they are charged and operational." Brendan looked at his PADD and moved back to his desk computer.
“Yes…yes sir” she smiled at the stranger in the office. Working on a PADD she had in her hand, “I can get you those reports right away, sir.” She gave him the device and stood in a semiformal stance.
"At Ease, Jaarre, a few weeks ago I was a Chief Warrant Officer, still worked for a freaking living." Brendan looked at the PADD, and his hand in a flash moved over the computer as he updated the records. He then stood straight and looked at the younger Bajoran. "
"So basically I know everything and in the eyes of enlisted, I am god." He chuckled he looked around his desk and raised an eyebrow making a grabbing motion in thin air with his right hand................" I'm supposed to have a cup of coffee in my hand when I do the 'I'm a chief warrant officer and I don't do formation or PT, skit'."
He leaned against the desk, crossed his arms. "So Bajoran, served in the militia I gather by the stance.... saw enough of them in my past. So what are the career plans, Chief petty officer or became the real thing and go for unicorn and become a warrant officer"
"Well sir" she paused and stared at her superior for a moment. "I'm happy to be serving aboard a Federation starship at the moment, but yes, I'd like to keep advancing the ranks if possible." The thought of going up the ranks made her smile even bigger as she waited for his response.
"Never liked the federation much, but beats a Klingon ship. Well, it's career planning. Enlisted tend to specialize. I'm not going to ask you to do a shift at Tactical, because that is not what you were trained for. Now in general you have two options stay in the security role do brig duty, keep the hand phasers working and looking impressive when we need security to add some gravitas. Or specialize in the security field. "He walked to the replicator, "Coffee, extra strong, extra hot."
He took the coffee and removed a small hip flask from a pocket in his trousers and pour some content of the flask in his coffee and put the flask back.
"Now I would suggest when you hit Chief Petty Officer to look at the warrant officer billet. You will be an officer and in general you scare the living shit out of anything below admiral. Because Chief Warrant Officer's run this fleet, they are the ultimate professionals. Well, most of them are. I was a CWO in irregular warfare. I taught at the academy and did some bits and bobs for Starfleet, which is way above everybody's pay grade and not supposed to be talked about in polite company."he chuckled.
"Good advice sir. I'll try to remember that as I move up the ranks" she was hoping she would move up the ranks eventually.
"If you need help, let me know. I think your bajoran militia history might give you an edge moving towards combat specialist. Starfleet needs those, very few of them left in the fleet. And yeah it's exploration and science and betterment of the species. But space is not a peaceful place." he stood up and rolled his neck. " Okay, did the mentor talk any place I can get shitfaced here? I know those engineering guys usually run a still in some forgotten part of the ship. "
"Not that I'm aware of sir. I haven't been aboard long" she smiled at him. She didn't mind if someone wanted to drink it wasn't her business and she did it on occasion. "If I find out the honey hole I'll let you know ASAP" the smile on her face grew wider. She could see her self getting along with the Lieutenant, which was a good thing.
"Good, kinda like breaking up a still and ruining the mood for the engineers. Dismissed, SO1* Jaarre" He moved back to his desk and went back to the report section. he still had to check with other NCO's and duty officers. It was tedious sometimes, but being the old hand did have a few benefits he knew every trick in the book. He also needed to check with operations/engineering and the starboard phaser array, which wasn't operating within guideline parameters. He would first need to check it for himself.
She gave a confident nod and quickly made her exit.
