The Check up

1,037 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: A marathon not a sprint
Location: Sickbay

Brendan entered the sickbay like many who had served for a few decades Starfleet doctors were just weird in his opinion, yet it was easier just to get this out of the way quickly.

It was kind of funny in a way, serving on a ship, he never realized that most serving officers on ships were that short. He knew he was above average height, but on stations and planet based assignments it never really was noticeable. Yet on average there were over a 1000 people any giving moment around you on a space station. He looked around and coughed, trying to get some Doctor or nurse to pay him attention you would think a guy his height would stand out.

"Sorry, I'm looking for a doctor? Just need to hand in my medical records?" He said to some officer who walked past him.

Hope was coming out of her office and overheard the man’s request. “I can take those records” she said with a smile as she approached him.

Summer was paying a visit to Sickbay, having checked in with one of the medical staff about taking vitamin supplements for her pregnancy. She was a bit of a picky eater at times and she didn’t want to deprive her baby of any vitamins or nutrients. She smiled as she greeted him. “Welcome aboard the Wolff, you’re obviously new here. I’m Summer Wyse, Chief Counsellor.”

"O'Sullivan, Brendan. Starfleet Security and probably the most damaged person on this ship. 27 years of basically taking the human body beyond its design specs. Shattered knee, shoulder has been fixed way too many times. Concussions, about a dozen I think. Destroyed eye socket, nose has been broken a few times now. Early wounds haven't healed that good, but in the maquis we didn't have many doctors or medics. And during the dominion war, too many Klingon doctors." He shrugged. "And before the Counsellor thinks she has a new pet project, I already know I'm nuts and have a nagging habit to stay alive" he chuckled

Hope was listening to all his previous injuries and checking them off on the records he had handed her. "Seems like you've been through it Lieutenant" she commented and smiled at the two of them. "I'm guessing since you are new to the ship you need your physical completed?"

Hope looked at Summer "is there anything you need, counselor?"

“Ohh I was just checking in regarding vitamin supplements” Summer smiled warmly. “It’s all sorted now, I’ll get out from underneath your feet.” She nodded to Brendan. “It’s been nice meeting you Lieutenant, feel free to drop by my office for your evaluation, or call for an appointment.”

"I tend to avoid pregnant people so first appointment will be after the pregnancy." He smiled and gave a wink.

"Yeah, better schedule in that physical and get it done with." Brendan yawned it was a busy day.

Hope smiled "now is as good a time as ever, Lieutenant" she gestured toward the first bio bed.

Brendan hopped on to the bio bed. " I'm not going to do number 1 and 2 in a cup, some weird Starfleet doctor on earth was obsessed with that. You got scanners hypo's and tricorders use those." he chuckled.

"No need for any samples today, Lieutenant" Hope shook her head wondering with a smile on her face. She had gathered a tricorder from an equipment cabinet and joined Brendan at the bio bed. "Anything bothering you today mister O'Sullivan?"

"Old age and 32-hour trip to get here. So basically knackered, muscle sores and haven't slept comfortably in 32 hours."he chuckled.

“That is a bad combination” Doctor Ross said with a smile and started her tricorder scans. “It’s been awhile since I’ve had a shuttle trip that lasted more than a few hours, fortunately.”

" Yeah, it's the layovers. Trip from earth to Jupiter station to Starbase 492 then to Starbase 286 and to the shipyards. If I could have hijacked a shuttle or runabout myself, I could have done it in half the time. In the old days I could just sleep anywhere. Explosions all around me, no problem, I could sleep. Now I get annoyed when somebody breathes. "He chuckled.

Hope let out a chuckle as well "well we all have our little annoyances" she said continuing her scans. "I couldn't imagine trying to sleep with explosion's going off around me" the Doctor shook her head glancing up from her tricorder.

" Spend time with an older brother who snores really loud and having monorail run about 300 meters from our farm on Volan III kind made me able to sleep anywhere and at any time." he smiled and shook his head. " Haven't been back to the old farm after the dominion war."

“Miss home?” Doctor Ross asked glancing up from her scans. She certainly missed her family.

"Not much left after the jem'hadar and cardassians ran through the DMZ. Parents are dead and brother and sister are MIA. So home is usually what I can carry in a bag and where I place my head." He looked at the doctor. "Do tend to avoid wet places... Knee tends to act up in cold and wet weather. "

“Well in those situations come visit me and we will see if there is something we can do about it.”

"It's a war wound, so it might also be psychosomatic. It locks up it hurts, and I walk with a limp, and every doctor who looked at it just gave me a hypo with a painkiller. Better to bear with it and endure the pain and discomfort for a few days. Are we done yet?" He looked at her.

"I have all I need" she gave a nod. "However I'd recommend some physical therapy for this ongoing problem. Rather than just a quick fix with a hypo, we might be able to work it loose and get you walking better."

"Thanks, I'll keep it in mind. Right now I need to check in with Security. I'll see what my schedule is,doc." He hopped of the biobed and headed for the exit.
