Azandria was literally a suprise to the first survey ships that visited the Typhon Expanse shortly after the re-emergence of the USS Bozeman in 2368. Despite the uselessness of long-range sensors, noone truly expected to find a planet that close to the Expanse, much less one that could support life. What they found was a world of mostly water and huge land-masses, with a temperate climate not unlike Earth's. It was tagged for closer investigation, but future events would put those on hold for years to come.

In 2373, a fleet of Federation ships gathered in the Typhon Sector to intercept yet another Borg incursion. One of the smaller ships, the USS Pytha, took a beating and was forced to crash-land on Azandria. Awaiting rescue, the survivors managed to do some investigating of their own. Not only did they find precious metals, but also the ruins of an ancient civilization. They also discovered the unique qualities of the Canyon's water system.

When the Captain of the Pytha reported her findings to Starfleet, it passed the information on to the Federation, which in turn became very interested in Azandria. An archaeological team was sent in, and the first beginnings of a settlement were made. Plans for research into the canyon were made as well, but were put on hold due to the Dominion War. A lucky break for the archaeology team came, when the ruins of what was most likely a library were uncovered. At first, the ruins were nothing more than that: a collection of rocks. But at specific intervals, a time distortion covered the library, restoring it back to it's original state. This allowed the researchers to actually look at the books and study Azandrian society. This time distortion is most likely connected to the Typhon Expanse.

Once the war ended, plans for a research facility were once again put on the table. It took the Federation two more years to get the logistics together, but in 2378, the facility finally began construction. During this three year project, the Federation realized that constructing a full-sized colony would not only be a good idea for all its personnel on the planet, but would also further establish Federation presence in the Typhon sector. After all, the Federation might not be the only party interested in the planet. So, in 2381 construction for a Starfleet-run Federation colony began. Because of its strange absence on long-range scanners, It was named Leto Colony, after the Greek titan Leto, "the hidden one."

Eventually, tourism and traffic from and to Deep Space Five began to play an important role in Leto Colony's growth. With the commerce industry flourishing, it didn't take long for Leto City to increase to a significant size.

Azandria comprised the first of two planets of the Azandria System, which lies just over one-and-a-half light years from the Typhon Expanse. Because if it's axial tilt and effects from her large moon Phyria, the planet stays nearly in the season of spring all year round.
