The modern Breen frigate was first encountered by the Federation near the end of the Dominion War. Like the Breen themselves, unfortunately, little was known about this vessel at the time. It wasn’t until Starfleet Intelligence was able to infiltrate the shipyards around Timus Two-Seven that some information about the type was found. The name “Ek Tral” was given to the class, being the designation of the original test vessel (Starfleet still calls it the “Frigate”-class). It entered service in late 2368 after some initial teething problems concerning its asymmetrical shape. Like other Breen ships, the frigate incorporates organic components but to what extent is unknown. It is believed that the Cardassians were the first species to encounter the ship, but it would be through the Ferengi that Starfleet became aware of it. By the time they joined the Dominion in 2375, the frigate formed the bulk of the Breen fleet.

The primary armament onboard is a number of photon torpedo launchers (estimated between 4 and 6) of uncertain power but great accuracy and several Type 8-style disruptors. The latter’s rate of fire is very slow, limiting it to only one or two volleys of fire per minute. Hence, the large number of launchers. Although possessing heavy armor, a glaring weakness of the frigate during the war was its shielding system. It simply could not withstand multiple hits from strong direct-energy weapons and quantum torpedoes, which were slowly becoming the main type in Starfleet vessels. It is believed that the system has since been upgraded to one based off a Jem'Hadar design as of 2380.

To compensate for this initial tactical disadvantage, frigates were rarely encountered alone and often attack in groups. Its small size makes this vessel very manoeuvrable and fast with speeds of warp 9.88. This makes the vessel a lot more difficult to hit. The Breen used their frigates much like fast-attack torpedo ships. They slashed along the perimeters of large battles, struck convoys and lightly-defended outposts, and carried out long-range interdiction missions. The most infamous of these, of course, was the attack on Starfleet Headquarters on Earth.

Since the war, intel gathered on the type suggests the Breen still have not found a suitable energy-based weapon to replace the slow-firing disruptors. They have, however, undergone an extensive sensor refit within the last two years.
