GIG Corporation

The Gil’hasneu Ibolus Getra’Poreq or roughly translated into Federation Standard as “The Greater Galactic Business Emporium” and more commonly known as the ‘’’GIG Corporation’’’, is a multi-species business conglomerate that has holdings in well over 150 worlds throughout both the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. It also had a foothold in the Gamma Quadrant in the early 2370s until the Dominion forced them out. GIG’s interests range from banking, financing, mining, terra-forming, shipping, bio-medical research, weapons development, and entertainment industries. It’s Board of Directors is mostly comprised of Ferengi, Dopterians, and Rigellians.

Like most of their business dealings, GIG’s history has been hard to document, with most of what is known collected by the Tal Shiar. Sometime in the 2240s, two Ferengi families merged their business interests by multiple marriages. With the combined resources, they pushed out from their home world of Volchuk Prime and found lucrative mining ventures in the Toctarian asteroid fields near First Federation space. From there the company grew expediently, branching out into both Cardassian and Federation space. Because of their willingness to transact and operate beyond the accepted galactic legal codes, GIG began (and still does) brisk business with the Romulan Star Empire in the 2290s.

Because of their association with the Romulans, Starfleet Intelligence began covert infiltration operations as early as 2309. They soon found that while eighty percent of the corporation was legitimate, GIG did operate expansive gambling and prostitution enterprises (both legal and not), as well as substantial arms-smuggling, counterfeitting, and corporate espionage rings. However, legal recourses against them have been few and far between. The shadowy infrastructure they operate under never leads back to the top, and they don’t mind paying a fine, bribing a regulatory official, or offering up a minor middle-manager to take the fall when they are implicated. On many Federation worlds, the acronym “GIG” has been construed to mean “Greed Is Good”.
