Galen IV

First settled in 2338 by the Federation, Galen IV is the fourth of five planets in the Galen System, located in the Alpha Quadrant near Talarian space. It thrived briefly as a trading post until the 2350s, when the Talarian Republic claimed ownership of it and several other colonies (see also Castal I). These disputes set off the Galen Border Conflicts of 2356-59. In 2357, the Talarians overran the lightly defended planet and destroyed the colony. Until 2368 it was believed that all the colonists had been killed, but there was one survivor. (TNG: "Suddenly Human")

The peace treaty between the two governments allowed resettlement by both peoples. It is now a major marketplace of goods and services, serving all that pass through. Two attempts by the colony government to join the Federation have failed by general referendum.
