A stalwart design with origins dating back to the mid-22nd century, the K't'inga itself first saw service in the mid-23rd century. The Klingon Empire had traditionally favoured heavily armed warships, a trend from which the K't'inga did not deviate, as it was one of the most fearsome starships employed by any race of the time. Armed with heavy disrupters and powerful torpedo launchers, the K't'inga gradually became the Empire's chief starship design, supplanting the older D-5 class as the battlecruiser of choice. Easy to build and maintain, the K't'inga remained a favourite with Klingon commanders until advancing technology allowed Birds of Prey to be built that were as well armed and shielded. An extensive retrofit programme embarked upon by several Klingon houses allowed a large number of K't'inga class cruisers to remain in service until the mid-2370s and beyond, but newer cruisers like the Vor'cha class and the extremely deadly Negh'var class have become the ship of choice.
