The archetypal Klingon warship, the Bird of Prey was first introduced in the 2270s and quickly became the weapon of choice in the Empire's cold war with the Federation. Equipped with a cloaking device, small, manoeuvrable and adequately armed for a ship of its size, it proved itself so versatile a design that it became the foundation of an entire line of Birds of Prey, most notably the B'rel class and the technologically maligned D12. Variations in size, armament and crew complement are common in the Bird of Prey's lineage, which runs from the original D-1 Type scout right through until the most modern version the D-14 Bird of Prey.

The D-13 type Bird of Prey (BoP) is one of the smallest versions of the class for over two hundred years. Standing at just 109m in length, the D-13 is ideal for covert operations, stealth and reconnaisance, however simply because it is designed for sneaking around doesn't mean she isn't capable of fighting. The D-13 is afterall a Klingon vessel. For a ship of her size she is considered to carry an inordinate level of arms by the standards of other Alpha Quadrant powers and as a result is not a vessel to be trifled with.

During peacetime operations the D-13 BoP performs a role akin to that of the Federation's light explorer vessels, such as the Intrepid, Steamrunner, or Nova classes, however with a much reduced size and extremely limited Science facilities, she operates in areas often far from home and as such features a decent ability to be self-sustaining for some time and due to the small crew can often resupply herself at most planets as required, since food storage is the primary problem aboard a Klingon vessel. She is however extremely well built and armoured, with a high capacity shielding grid.

During Combat operations, the D-13 performs two roles, the first of being the Klingon fleets primary means of forward reconnaissance and secondly her low sensor profile and cloaking capability enables her to perform hit and run style raids behind enemy lines to disrupt the enemies ability to operate, this is sometimes conducted alone but more commonly in "Targ Packs" of 3-9 D-13's much akin to the German Wolf Packs of the Second World War. This strategy is often highly effective and ties up forces behind the lines securing supply lines and diverts forces away from the main Klingon force, D-13's operating in a Targ pack are often upgraded in terms of heavier torpedoes and boarding parties, which are more suited to warfare than exploration. In essence, their role is that of a force multiplier. They are not often seen participating in pitched battles because they tend to be lost in high numbers, but they have been known to partake successfully.
