After lessons learned during the Dominion War where close quarters combat was commonplace and often resulted in unacceptable losses, SFMC issued a design order to manufacture a lighter, more effective CQB (close quarter battle) version of the standard phaser rifle. The result of this was the phaser Carbine To reduce the overall length of the Carbine massive internal modifications were made. The targeting assistance of this weapon is extremely limited; typically a red dot sight instead of the complex systems of the Mk17 given the more intuitive benefit of actually showing where the shot will hit. A collapsible stock is fitted to the carbine increasing the stability of the weapon in medium range engagements The real improvement for close range engagement, however, is the capability to fire in longer pulse mode. This allows faster target engagements, and quicker follow up shots. The downside to this is that the Carbine lacks the variable settings of its rifle counter part. The Mk1 can also be modified to carry a Mk23 Rifle Mounted Grenade Launcher, this is achieved by removing the foregrip from the underside rail and then attaching the Mk23 onto said rail. A foregrip can also be added to a clip on the base of the grenade launcher if the operator so wishes.

The weapon has an alternate selection fire mode in addition to the standard 1-12 power levels, it can either fire in the standard beam mode common to all phaser rifles, it can fire in a single round pulse, or a three round pulse setting. Both the beam and pulse settings require the same level of power consumption, however the three round pulse, unsurprisingly requires three times the power of the regular mode, but makes the weapon much alike a sub-machine gun from the 21st century, a truly awesome weapon in close quarters.
