A Platoon Commander is the Marine in command of an 32-Marine platoon. The position is usually held by a Second Lieutenant or First Lieutenant in a regimental setting. As a shipborne, platoon strength detachment the Platoon Commander, acting as detachment commander could be a Captain or Major.

The mandate of a Platoon Commander is to command their platoon in accordance with the orders from their Marine Commanding Officer (in a detachment) or their Company Commander (in a regiment setting). As well they are expected to issue orders in keeping with their mission objectives to their subordinate squads. Platoons are often called upon to act independantly for long periods of time and as such the Marine Platoon Commander needs to have the respect of his or hers Marines.

The Platoon Commander reports to his Company Commander and/or company executive officer.
