The Alpha Centauri system is the nearest star system to the Sol system and was the first star system beyond their own to be colonized by Humans. Alpha Centauri is a trinary system, located 4.3 light years from Sol in the Beta Quadrant. As of 2385, the system was home to three space stations, four shipyards, the massive Caldera Subspace communications array, and numerous scientific outposts and observatories. Its currently population is 21 billion. Although home to six inhabited planets, decendants of the original human settlers collective refer to themselves as Centaurans. They were one of the founding members of the Federation in 2161.
