The Keldon class heavy cruiser is a classic example of the design philosophy of the resource strapped Cardassian Union. Designed to be built rapidly, sturdily and to survive extended combat performance, in addition to this the Keldon is designed to operate with a tiny crew and to perform a wide variety of roles.
The Keldon is designed to use many of the same components as the Galor class. This sped up construction and made logistics for repair much easier. In many cases, the new components can actually be used on the Galor even though they were not designed for the older ship, this level of interchangeablity is common of Cardassian vessels, to enable easier repairs and to conserve resources. And whilst most the Galor class' systems can be uprated to be the equivalent of the Keldon via this method, the Keldon class still carries a superior level of combat proficiency and thanks to advanced in metallurgy featues a much stronger hull.
The original Keldon class design was formidable at best before the Dominion got their hands on it and once they had done, the proficiency of the Keldon soared from the equal of a Nebula to nearly that of a Galaxy class, providing it with the staying power required to fight their enemy of the moment, the Federation. Many of the Dominion upgrades have remained in the Keldon classes specifications. With the latest refit of the Keldon class, thanks to a larger shuttlebay has now been equipped with a number of small Kourak class fighters.
