Mission:
Misson 1 - Rebirth
Location: Captain's ready room
Timeline: 4th february 2395 0930hrs
ON:
HG looked around the ship as got on board, well around the corridors. Some yellow shirted type had told her to report to ready room with orders in hand and they would make sure her small duffel would be taken to assigned quarters. So now she found herself wandering, though she knew the way. A few uniformed types asked her if she knew where she was going and she nodded. They did not expect to see a gal with long brown hair, frumpy blouse and trousers, scuffed leather jacket and shoes traipsing down the hallways. HG had memorized the layout of the ship but this was the first time really on one if you did not count that bit of fluff on the cadet cruise she had to do way back when.
Finally she got to where she was going even if she had to hurry up and curb her curiosity. The one thing she had been brought up on and even if her mind wandered off into misty realms of math was to be prompt.
"Hello," she chirped cheerfully to the blonde with the single pip having arrived to where she had been told to go. "HG Wells, reporting in miss. Lovely ship. I tapped on a few bulkheads but they seem not to be victurium, it has a distinct ring to it."
"Hello Miss Wells." Miranda said looking up at the woman. "I'm Miranda Fry the Captains yeoman, can I see your papers please."
"HG please...if I get Miss, Doctor or whatever Wells it will send me to looking for the nearest exist figuring some grad student wanting me to check work. Well not sure about papers, but here," HG presented the PaDD that had some official looking bunch of script that she had been told to present. It worked at security so it must be the same thing. "Hopefully the right bits." HG watched the pretty blonde. She was cute enough but seemed a bit too young for her tastes.
Miranda took the papers and quickly scanned through them. "These are all in order, the Captain will be back shortly, she was called away on a family matter."
"Oh I do hope nothing serious?" HG replied with genuine concern. "If need be I can come back when it is more convenient."
As if on cue Taliserra walked through the door with Lashell slung over her shoulder. "Thank you Miranda." She said and slowly sat down in her chair. "Miss Wells I beleive?"
"Close enough Captain, though technically it is doctor but I much prefer just HG," HG eyed the woman and child. "If this is not a good time for you, I can always come back some other time."
"No, it is fine, Lashell is just being a little needy today." Taliserra explained. "So, HG. What brings you to my ship?"
HG almost chuckled but suppressed it. "What brings me is that somehow Fleet slipped up and let me get on board one. I went through the Academy but afterwards they, the proverbial they, wanted to tie me to lab and a desk. I want to actually be a part of the universe not just study it in some lab."
Miranda quietly passed a Padd over to Taliserra, she quickly glanced through it.
"So you resigned and somehow still managed to get them to give you an assignment despite being a civilian?" Taliserra said, she was finding it unusual that Hg was here.
"Indeed, I did not want to be stuck in a building. I have a passion for how the universe works, really works, the stuff hidden away that we cannot experience directly, the bits and pieces as it where that lies under nature's skirts. I always thought that one had to be a part of the universe in order to understand that. The Fleet did not want me on a ship so I basically told them to bugger off." HG shrugged. "Perhaps a big mistake and I will admit to making mistakes, not many mind you, but I am fallible just like any other. Anyway, afterwards I basically told them I was going to go work with the Cardassians. That got their attention real fast."
"And they dumped you on the nearest ship they could, mine." Taliserra didn't look impressed. "So tell me, why should I have you in place of one of my science officers?"
"Oh, I do not know precisely," HG replied. "I mean you could request to have me booted off. I am not sure how far that will get. However, other than I do not officially hold a rank, I am according to regulations subject to all reasonable commands given by the command in charge of a Federation star ship, so that should take care of the part. Now as to a science officer, well I do know a thing or two, physics is my speciality but not bad with xenobiology and a few other things." HG thought for a moment, "You have my record there, it should be obvious why Fleet sort of bent backwards for me."
"Because you have doctorates, awards and even a Zee-Magness from many well known science academies across the federation, impressive." Taliserra said, a lot of the science officers onboard had significant commendations otherwise they wouldn't be there but a Zee-Magness was certainly something.
"And I have been working on a theory that involves what I call two time physics. It meshes quantum physics with Einsteinian physics without any of the niggling leftovers. A consequence is if I am correct is that it has some significant military advantages. Hence, why the Federation wanted me to stay put, why I resigned so they could make me and hence the reason for letting me have a bit of my way. Now that being said, I really am at this ship's service. I may not hold official rank, but I will work with everyone as though I am still in the Fleet. Good enough sir?"
'I hate scientists' Taliserra thought. "Good enough, you can stay, at least for now....HG."
HG made a small nod of the head, "Thank you captain. I appreciate it and hope to earn a bit more of your trust."
Taliserra turned to Miranda. "Miranda will you show Miss Wells to her quarters and then to see Lt Edwards."
"Yes Ma'am." Miranda replied.
HG knew a dismissal and she stood and nodded rather than salute but it meant the same thing. She then followed the yeoman out.
Miranda led HG across the bridge and into the turbolift. "You left coming onboard rather late Miss Wells." Miranda said. "We are due to leave in less than 24 hours."
"I know," HG replied smiling but she could grit her teeth at the Miss Wells. "The shuttle was running late and I had to take civilian one rather then a Federation one. I am normally one for being prompt."
"There are advantages to not being a Civilian." Miranda remarked. "There is a little get together in the lounge tonight, no one is ordered to show but it will be a good opportunity to get to know the rest of the crew."
"Thank you, I shall be there." HG was not going to go into the whole there where disadvantages to being in Fleet. She already had that one with the captain and she was pretty sure the yeoman would hear about it sooner or later.
After a very short journey the turbolift stopped and Miranda led HG across the corridor. "You're quarters are just around here, a couple of doors down from this turbolift station."
"Very good," HG replied. If it had a bed and a shower and some computer access that was all she needed. She tended to travel light. "Thank you, you have been most gracious," HG added as she got to the door. "I hope to see you later on at the party then."
"I may be there." Miranda said. "If I have time, there is still a lot of work to be done before we leave tomorrow."
"Understood, well thank you, and I look forward to be a productive member of the crew rank or no rank."
"When you're ready the science labs are just around the corner from the turbolift shaft on deck 9, Lieutenant Edwards should be around there somewhere." Miranda added.
"Very good, thank you. I do have an appointment scheduled." HG nodded to the ensign and not knowing what else to say, "Guess I will freshen up a bit before the party and meetings."
"Then I shall leave you to it. Good day Miss Wells." Miranda said with a smile.
HG smiled, there was not reason to get into a bitch fest over the Miss Wells rather than HG at least not until she had gotten more established. "You as well," she replied as sweetly as she could.
