With the repairs to the Apollo sufficient for them to get underway again Taliserra had the course set back to Starbase 54, her mind turned to other matters and finishing the report she'd have to file. As she typed out the report she got to the circumstances behind the last pirate ship getting away from the Wolff and the unusual sensor disruption they had used against her ship. She pondered what to put for a few minutes before sitting back in her chair and tapping her combadge.
=/\= Lieutenants Sika and Edwards please report to the ready room.=/\=
Anthony was the first to react. he tapped his comm badge and said =/\=Be there in a few minutes Commander Tigran.=/\= "Computer end log." He packed away the experiment he was working on and started out for the ready room.
"Hold your damn horses!" shouted Lieutenant Sika from across the Bridge. He had him comm badge on, but the Captain's Ready Room was well within an arm's throw of one of his tools across the Bridge.
Sika placed his tool kit aside as he was working on one of the consoles and walked across the Bridge, giving his uniform a quick tug. He stood outside the Ready Room doors until they opened. When he walked in his temper had mellowed a bit as he looked at the Commanding Officer. "I'm sorry" he said quickly for yelling across the Bridge. "I've been out there trying examine the damn sensors. They are functional of course as we're moving again, but I'm still not satisfied"
Anthony walked in as Sika said the sensors were functional again. “Ah good we can see again then. I expect that will mean more science work on the bridge again then?”
Sika just looked at Lieutenant Edwards. He did not need to say anything. His look spoke for him. Really? You are thinking about science when we are just getting sensors back to operating normally?
"Though I respect Lieutenant Edwards' enthusiasm to get out there on a scientific journey of exploration, I'm still concerned with the sensors. Right now, we have enough 'sight' to stay off the walls, but we're still staggering around out there."
"That answers my first question." Taliserra said, glad that more of the sensors were back online, she'd made the navigation sensors the priority so they could get underway. "Keep working on them and when we get to starbase 54 we'll get them looked at more intensively."
Sika nodded agreeing with Taliserra. "It would be prudent that we have 54's Operations personnel have a look at them, but I'm putting my foot down right here right now just so you are aware. I want to oversee their work. So, don't think about giving me shore leave or anything. It's not happening. People poking around my systems, I want to be here."
“Not that I think that our fix it men under Lieutenant Sika or the starbase personnel need any science observations but any help that we can will be offered to Lt Sika once we Dock ma’am.” Anthony said.
"That is exactly what I would do if I was still chief Ops." Taliserra remarked. "But make time for this new task I have for you both. I need you to review the sensor data we managed to get of the bouy the caused this disruption. How it worked, why our shields didn't stop it and how to develop a countermeasure. If starfleet sends a ship after these pirates they will need something to counter this weapon."
“I have been working on the data we have had already Commander. The small amount that I have been sort out so far appears that momentarily before it exploded it sent out an Electromagnetic Pulse. This seemed to pass through out shields and it seems to be aimed directly and knocking out our sensors.” Anthony said.
Sika scoffed at Athony's report. He looked at the man quickly and excused himself. "It's not you" he said to the man. Sika looked at Taliserra and crossed his arms. "Not the first time someone has used some sort of modified or amplified EMP to take our sensors or shields. The Ferengi have experimented with the technology in the past and made use of prototypes aboard their D'Kora class mauraders. They only have used it as a last ditch effort in the past, and it's rather ineffective with our shield technology in recent years. The Ferengi also had a power issue of their own with the weapon. It caused about as much damage to their systems as it did to our own. It was a gambler's move at best" explained Sika.
"Keep looking at it." Taliserra instructed. "If it got through our shields and ours are rated against nearly half of the EM spectrum I think any other ship may be in even more trouble."
“Certainly Commander Tigran we will want to find and close the gap that they found to damage us.” Anthony smiled he thought Lieutenant Sika was being a little picky on pointing out that EMP’s had been used against the federation and decided to respond. “That is likely why they used a remote sensor then.”
Sika nodded along with Edwards. “They got lucky, but their luck is about to change. The first cut is the deepest. They found a vulnerability and they exploited it. It will not happen again, and if they try it again, I’m hoping to develop a means of reversing it and giving them a taste of their own damn medicine.” replied Sika. “Maybe even a little stronger so they get the message.” he added.
"That is all I need, just a way to stop it, that any of our ships can use if needs be." Taliserra said, she was thinking about the longer term, if someone had developed a technology that could get through the very well designed shields on starfleet ships things could be very bad if it got into the wrong hands.
"The readings I got off that remote prob we should be thankful that it did it from a distances because if it exploded inside our shields we would be limping back from here as it would have likely damaged the deflector array." Anthony said. He knew Lt Sika had spent many hours on the sensors but having good sensors would be useless without the deflector to keep certain particles away from their flight plan.
"My people would be praising the prophets for that small miracle." commented Sika. "Glad to know we can get back under our own power and on our own accord at least. Had we lost our deflector in the attack, I would not have dared move an inch unless it was absolutely necessary" noted Sika.
"I certainly do not want to be towed back to a starbase... again." Taliserra told them. "See what you can do to find a counter but focus on getting our sensors back to fully operational... all of them."
“I could think of worse that a tow Ma’am but I completely agree because I don’t want to head back in a life boat either, or in an long distance science probe. Klingons are strange people.” Anthony said. “I’ll rotat my crew through a roster of helping with the sensors Ma’am.”
"I will see what I can do about that" replied Sika swiftly. He was not about to make any promises. Things were not looking so well.
"Dismissed, both of you.." She finally said.
Anthony teased with a friendly salute and a wave before he said, “So it there any help you need at the moment Lieutenant Sika?”
Sika looked at the man, somewhat scrutinizing his uniform. Scientist he thought to himself. "I think Engineering and Operations will be fine handling the heavy lifting. I'd recommend studying more in regards to what they hit us with and how we can better prepare ourselves."
"Well I was just order to do exactly that anyway so I was planning on it." Anthony said and rolled his eye as he left the ready room.
