Mission:
The science of stars
Location: Uss Wolff - Bridge
Timeline: 8th March 2395 - 1330hrs
ON:
"Ma'am, we are about a half a light year outside the farther planet in the system." Lt. Yuvek stated from the Helm console. "No sign of any vessels or equivilant technology." He added.
"Drop us out of warp and hold position at the edge of the system." Taliserra ordered, without knowing the technology level of the possible inhabitants of the system it was safer to stay at a distance to avoid discovery.
"Roger," The Cardassian Helmsman responded. "Maintaining position."
As the ship slowed past the warp barrier the small planetary system came into view, two of the planets could be seen; the first large and vibrantly coloured, the second looking decidedly less virbrant and cold judging by the large ice sheets forming over it, even at this distance parts of the bridge were illuminated by the light from the large and extremely bright sun.
'A nice looking system' Taliserra thought as she watched the viewscreen for a few seconds. "Full sensor sweep and don't spare the sensors, use whatever you need."
“On it Captain.” Anthony said as chief he was the one on bridge shift at the moment and his fingers danced over the science station and small bits and pieces started coming in. “Goldilocks appears at this distance to be pre-warp.” As he said it a finger tapped a button to darken the bridge level sensors which reduced the glare in the bridge.
Situated at science station two, Watanabe looked over the data coming in about the star, "So if that one's Goldilocks who are the other two planets, sir? Papa Bear, Mama Bear or Baby Bear?" he asked Edwards when punched commands into his console. "The star is definitely in a period of high activity, the radiation output is," he gave a low whistle. "High. I'd say transporters are a no go on the Class L, and I am not surprised Goldilocks is pre-warp, if they have the tech, the rad levels outside their ozone layer would be prohibitive to early space flight, but shouldn't be a problem for our shields though."
Anthony laughed and said “Going with the Robert Southey story of the Three bears, papa bears porridge is too hot and baby bears was too cold so I guess they are the names we should go with Unless no one has a problem with Anthonian one to three.”
Lt. Yuvek sat quietly and listened to the back and forth discussion about some Human fairytale. He never understood the tendency of certain species to put so much credence in ridiculous tales in explaining complex situations in reality.
He failed to understand the significance of referring to one planet as 'Gold-y-locks' as opposed to the others as various bears. He would have gladly taken Anthonian over some anthropomorph tale of beasts eating some soup.
"No, objections here, sir," Watanabe said with a grin. He tapped a few keys on his panel and the ship's charts adjust with Edward's names added. Papa Bear, Goldilocks and Baby Bear." Though he doesn't upload them up to the Fleet's chart database. At least not yet.
"We'll stay here for a while until we have a good overview of the system." Taliserra said as she got up and walked around to the science stations. "Prepare a few class VII probes and send them towards each planet."
“Aye Captain class VII probes. We will get plenty of information from them before we have to choose which of the planets to approach first." He looked at the q class planet and thought It is unlikely to contain long term life species unless they were adapted for both a long cold period and a short but quite hot period as it showed quite a lopsided elliptical track.
"Launch them whenever ready," Taliserra told him. "how long before you'll have a good overview of the system?"
“I expect we should have working information on the closer planets in a couple of hours and then reasonable information on the furthest one a few hours after that. More will of course come in both the closer we get and the longer the probes are working around the planets they are circling.” Anthony said. “Once it starts coming in depending on how quickly it come in will depend on how quickly my team can analyse them. We will get you the information as quickly as possible.”
"Ma'am, since we don't have sufficient information on the radiation that is coming from the planets, I'd suggest we maintain our distance here and allow the probes to report back. If the radiation is too great for the local population to properly develop warp capability, I'd hate to risk a problem developing with our systems as well." Lt. Yuvek stated from helm.
“I completely agree with Lt Yuvek in that, at least until we get good information on it.” Anthony said. “I am a typical science officer I would love to jump in both feet first however, until we know the sun is conducive to life I would suggest caution.”
"Send another probe as close to the sun as we can get it, get as much information as you can." Taliserra added, the sensors would give a good idea but a close observation of the sun would be even better.
“Aye Captain!” Anthony said in his clipped Scottish accent as he started prepping another probe for solar radiation readings.
"Lets schedule a briefing for 0900, that should give you plenty of time to get a good look around the system and then we can figure out our options." Taliserra walked back towards her chair as she spoke.
“Aye Captain.” Anthony said and added the briefing reminder to all his science staff and the other chiefs. As he did the probe finished its configuration and a finger hovered for launch. It was his probe so he launched and said “The solar probe is away Captain.”
"Very good." Taliserra said as she sat down and looked towards the viewscreen at the system the crew were going to get to know intimately over the next month.
