1,007 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: The science of stars
Location: Doctor Seleya's Quarters
Timeline: Just prior to Breifing

ON:

The outbreak, the loss, the working fourteen to sixteen hour days were fast catching up to Seleya. The day had started out early and pretty much just like any other day with a mild headache being the worst of it.

As the day went on the mild headache annoyance turned into a dizziness she could not shake. She knew what would come next. She had to head it off. After handing the sickbay over to Doctor Keagan temporarily, Seleya started to gingerly make her way towards her quarters only to be thwarted by the ship, at least in her mind, doing barrel roles. She realized quickly that it wasn’t the ship but the dizziness was getting worse and this time it came with nausea. Within seconds it had Seleya down on her knees trying to breathe through her I need to throw up feeling.

Elijah looked at his schedule as he walked. The briefing would begin in three hours. He was glad he’d been asked to join in. The goal was to keep busy, to keep from thinking about Galatea’s death. He sighed taking his eyes off the PADD just long enough to check the hall ahead to make sure he wouldn’t bump into anyone. What greeted him was the new CMO down on her knees gasping for breath and looking disoriented.

Tucking the PADD in his back pocket he sprinted down the hall and dropped to his knees beside her. “Doctor Seleya,” he gently placed a hand on her back. “Let’s get you to sickbay.”

The thought horrified her. She grabbed his arm, “No…Not sickbay. I….I… I need to get to my quarters. Please…..”

Against his better judgement he helped her to her feet and then to her quarters

Elijah helped her to the sofa where she sat, her face a pale shade of green, trying hard to slow her breathing. As he watched her he saw that she’d entered a meditative state. About a half hour later she seemed to snap out of it looking like her old self.

Seleya looked up at him in surprise, “You are still here?”

He sighed, “Well you did look like you were about to have a heart attack. I figured I’d better be here to call for help just in case.”

She raised an elegant eyebrow, “I was not having a heart attack.”

He sighed and crossing his arms across his chest and leaning against the wall directly across from her. “I know that. When I looked at you a bit better I realized you were having an anxiety attack.”

Her eyes narrowed, “Vulcan’s do not have anxiety attacks Lieutenant Alexander.”

Undeterred by her icy tone he smiled, “Well you are a Vulcan and you did have an anxiety attack. Galatea got them all the time so I know what they look like.”

Seleya stood, perhaps a bit too quickly. A wave of dizziness washed over her causing her legs to give out.

Elijah was across the room with cat like speed. He caught her before she hit the ground.

Seleya groaned and her head thudded on his shoulder.

Elijah gently lifted her and placed her on the sofa. He hurried to the replicator ordering a water with a twist of lemon. He knelt by her and gently held the glass to her lips so she could sip the cold water.

Seleya sipped hungrily at the water.

“Slow down doc,” he said.

When she finished he placed the glass on the coffee table. “Easy until this passes.” He studied her. “See panic attack.”

She let out a shuddering sigh, “The..briefing…”

“Is three hours away,” he finished for her. “Try to sleep.”

She closed her eyes. She was tired. She was tired from the work, from dealing with everything on her own, and she was tired of being alone. She opened her eyes and looked up at him. “Will you stay with me?”

Elijah smiled, “Sure.” He sat down beside the sofa and took her hand. She held onto his hand tightly and drifted off to sleep.

When she awoke he was still there holding her hand. She scrambled up from the sofa losing her footing only to wind up in his arms again.

He smiled, “You know doc, you have to stop falling into my arms like that.”

“I can assure you I did not mean to..” Her voice trailed off as she looked into his eyes.

He smiled noting she did nothing to pull away. If anything she’d moved closer.

“We should head out,” she said.

Grinning he said, “The briefing is still two hours away. You didn’t sleep long.”

“I see,” she said.

Elijah noted that she still hadn’t stepped away, not that he was complaining. The doctor was a beautiful woman. Reluctantly he said, “I should get back to the SECTACT office.”

As if realizing she still held on to him she stepped back. He saw the deep green colour rise to her face. “I’m sorry Lieutenant. I’ve kept you too long.”

He shrugged, “As long as you’re feeling better.”

I wish I wasn’t she thought. “Yes, quite better, thank you.”

He held back a sign. He was reluctant to go but turned and headed towards the door.

Seleya watched him leave and when he was gone she sank down into the sofa and signed. She took a few minutes to composer herself and then decided on a shower, a cold one, not the first one she’d taken on the account of Lieutenant Alexander since they’d began serving together aboard the Wolff.

Outside Elijah hurried towards his quarters deciding that he better take a few minutes to calm himself. The doctor had a way of heating his blood, if he was fair he’d had a crush on her since the first day they’d run into one another.
