654 words; about a 3 minute read
Mission:
The science of stars
Location: Sickbay, USS Wolff
Timeline: Current
ON:
Seleya sat in her office going over reports. She looked up as her door whooshed open. “Chief Payton. Thank you for coming.”
Seleya studied the man as he sat down. He'd aged and looked tired and worn. No doubt he hadn’t slept since the news about Galatea got out. She’d tried to get him to take a sedative but he’d have none of it preferring the natural route. “Can I bring you a tea?”
He shook his head.
“Well then. To work. I need your assistance. I need you back to full speed. I have made a few changes to the way sickbay will run and have, I believe, solved some inefficiencies that Doctor Polaris was trying to solve herself. At our last meeting she came up with a plan and as she is not here to request it and after a refining, of sorts, I would like you to execute the plan.”
Hunter took the PADD offered and looked it over. “The Plan” as she’d called it had Galatea written all over it. His eyes misted over. “I will…I will do my best.” Perhaps it was time that he returned to duty. It had been a long time and laying on the ground of your quarter’s barley alive was not a way to exist. He’d tried to reach out to the Prophets but so far from Bajor they’d been silent.
He looked up. “I will start with the new schedule organizing and then get the medications and equipment alphabetized.”
Seleya gave a nod. “There is one other thing…”
Hunter looked up. “Yes?”
Seleya pulled out a tricorder that looked as though it belonged on the ship once commanded by Captain Kirk. “It was Doctor Polaris’ In her will she wished it to you.”
He took the tricorder and this time the tears spilled over.
Uncomfortable at the display Seleya began formulating ways to get him out of her office before he really started crying.
She didn’t have to formulate for long as the door opened again and in walked Lieutenant Junior Grade Elijah Alexander.
The tears in the Chief seemed to dry up completely. He placed the tricorder on the desk and stood with a force Seleya feared might need some control.
“You! She’s dead so you could be alive. She gave her spirit so yours could live!”
That had been the point. Eli knew when they were on the ship together something like this might happen. He’d have asked for a transfer if he’d had time. On Betazed there was belief that just as there were Imzadis there were also the opposite. The story was that when the Betazoid people were forms the Gods split them into three. One that was mean to reunite with the other and one piece that was doomed to not be reunited but if the three should be whole then havoc would rain and it would end badly for the piece that was the soul of the three.
Hunter and Galatea were meant to be together. Imzadi, Elijah and Galatea were not. Every time they were together something bad happened and now this. He’d felt guilty and torn since her death. He didn’t blame Hunter nor did he stop him when he saw the quick motion Hunter’s fist heading toward him.
The contact made a sickening crack and the blood that gushed form Elijah’s nose told him it was broken. He would not strike back.
Seleya stood. “Chief Payton!” She was about call security as she grabbed a cloth and took it to Elijah. The security officer waved her away.
“It is alright. No security, no charges” He said rather mutedly.
“Get out.” She told the Chief and watched as he took Galatea’s tricorder and left.
“To the main sickbay with you.” She said…
