Mission:
The science of stars
Location: Deck 8- Armoury
Timeline: 24th march 2395
ON:
After gathering up all the weaponry her away team had taken with them Amanda wheeled a box towards the armoury to check them all back in, she knew Gabe would probably be going the same thing right now so it'd be a good chance to see him again.
Passing through the doors she looked around for him but there was no sight. "Petty Officer D'Anconia." She called out.
Gabe heard the chime go off letting him know that someone was in the check in/out area then he heard Amanda's voice. He grinned as he pivoted away from the work bench and headed to the front.
"Yes Ensign?" He asked as he made it to the room she was in.
"Phasers from my away team to check back in." Amanda replied and lifted the case onto a nearby ledge.
He nodded and pulled a PADD from under the counter, popped the case open and started to go over the serial numbers of the rifles and paused when he got to the one checked out to Amanda.
"Just what, pray you tell, Ensign happened to YOUR baby?" he asked in an almost accusatory tone "If this is how you take care of your assigned weapons I'm rethinking letting you play with my toys in the special locker."
"Wasn't my fault," Amanda said jokingly as she pulled out her phaser rifle to show Gabe the gouges. "A predator took a chunk out of it with it's teeth."
He levelled a steely gaze at her "You were slipping Ensign, you should have eyes in the back of your head or that chunk could have come out of your tookus." then he grinned "I sentence you to repair duty with me. Help me cart these weapons back into the shop, sort them, check them and then house them. If someone with more pips doesn't have you doing something else."
"I don't think the boss has any need of me for now, did he not give you the rest of today and tomorrow off after we've got our medical checks signed off on?" Amanda put her rifle back into the case and shut it.
Gabe nodded "Indeed they have however I gotta get the weapons back to working order before I start my down time." he said simply "And you gotta fix your own weapon." he grinned at her.
"I'm hoping it's just external and all I'll need to do is replace the casing." Bringing the case with her Amanda entered her security code into the door leading into the workshop and stepped inside. "It still functioned alright when I needed it to."
"Sounds like a casing issues then." he pointed towards the workbench where the extra cases were located "Start stripping it apart while I log these back in and inspect them before replacing them into their cabinets."
Giving the case to Gabe Amanda took her rifle out and dropped in down onto a workbench. She pulled the power pack out and grabbing some tools started to detach the outer case of the rifle to get at the internal parts to check their integrity.
He took the case and placed it onto the work bench in the area that he had assigned for returning weapons check in. He popped the case open, and pulled a tricorder out and ran it over the collection of weapons. He looked over the readouts and nodded before folding the tricorder up and placing it on the workbench. He picked up a rifle and did a quick field strip to look over the components with a fluid speed that only comes from hours of repeated movements. As he cleared each phaser he placed it back into the crate pointing in the opposite direction before picking up another and repeating his check.
"Surprised you haven't asked about your baby yet." Amanda said as with a series of quiet clicks the casing of her rifle came apart.
"Your a smart young officer. If she wasn't fine I think you have enough sense to jettison yourself out there nearest airlock."
Amanda laughed slightly, "She's at the bottom of the case, never fired and only dropped once."
He grunted and got to the bottom of three crate then groaned. "Why would you drop a piece if art? Would you drop the mona lisa or the David? No no you wouldn't."
"Wasn't my doing," Amanda replied hearing the groan. "Ensign Watanabe knocked it off the crate it was laid on. A few harsh words were fired his way."
He grunted again this time more forcefully "I foresee remedial weapons retention classes for the good Ensign."
"You going to chain my rifle to my arm so I can't drop it?" Amanda smirked slightly. "Looks like there is a crack in the pre-fire chamber, I'd hoped it wasn't this bad."
He nodded and looked at her, his visage serious. "IF that's what it will take to train the security personnel how to retain their weapons then I'll make that suggestion to the Captain." He moved to look over her shoulder at the chamber and nodded "Pre-fire chambers are to your left." then he moved back to the crate and continued to field strip the rifles to clean and inspect them before placing them back in storage.
Laughing slightly Amanda got up at headed to a parts locker. "I'd like to see her reaction to that suggestion." Grabbing the part she needed she went back to the bench. "How were things with your team?"
He sighed as his fingers deftly removed the outer covering of the first rifle and pulled the pre-fire chamber, battery pack, focusing crystal and trigger assembly out without looking.
"The team was alright, it was cold and there was a surprising abundance of life on the planet. We also found evidence of a bronze age civilization that apparently died out long ago. Cave art and a surprising understanding of thermodynamics with relation to liquid movement."
Amanda was surprised Gabe had some scientific knowledge "I didn't like the sound of the weather on that planet when I heard about it. I'm glad I got assigned to the warm planet, got to catch some rays while the scientists played at science."
He looked over his shoulder at her and grinned "SF Extended Continuing Education Courses. You'd be supprised how much you can learn in 20 years of bumping along on a boat. Trust me, I didnt like the sound of the weather on that planet either. I hated Cold Weather Training, damned near froze my balls off."
Amanda nodded, cold weather training was certainly unpleasant. "Spent two weeks in the northern wastes on Andoria for mine. Minus 30 was considered warm there, worst two weeks I've ever spent apart from getting my shoulder 'fixed'."
"Yeah, that's where I did mine too. I understand why they are blue. We got some decent data from the small excursion we were able to make. I plan on taking the data and making a holo out of it so I can study it a bit more when we have more time." he said as he looked down at the readouts of the tricorders reading on the parts of the rifle before doing his visual check.
Positioning the replacement chamber into her rifle Amanda secured it and reconnected the other parts to it. "You'll have to let me know when you're done, it sounds like an interesting place."
"Only if you dont drop your Rifle in the holodeck." he said grinning as he looked over his shoulder at her. His hands sliding along the rifle he was currently reassembling.
With a speed gained from repeated practise Amanda quickly reassembled her phaser rifle then stood up. "Can't promise anything." She replied. "I need to go funcion test this."
He nodded "You know where the test fire area is behind the office. Just make sure the barrel is in the barrel."
"Oh come on I'm not that bad." Amanda laughed as she picked her rifle up and went towards the test area. "I'll be right back."
He grunted as he continued with the rifle, visually inspecting each component and placing it on the mat in front of him. Being careful where each piece went.
A few minutes later Amanda emerged.
"Computer, time." he said as he closed his eyes and reassembled the rifle by memory. "Time!" he shouted as the last place was reattached.
The soft feminine voice responded "3.65 seconds." he grunted ".1 seconds slower than my best."
"That's not bad Gabe," she told him after realizing what he was doing, she'd had done similar during her security training.
He nodded to her "Thanks, but there was a Lt in my old command that could do it in 3 flat." he tilted his head to her rifle "How is it functioning?"
Amanda smiled. "She's fine, no problems." She walked over to the storage cases and put her rifle in one. "Field stripping and reassembling quickly isn't the be all and end all Gabe, smoothness and accuracy beat speed in my opinion."
"It helps when your in a foxhole waiting for a dominion charge." he quipped back "When your not, it's an enjoyable activity to keep your skills sharp. Muscle memory, spacial awareness and memory. As my old DI told me if you don't wanna kick your air addiction, exercise your thinkin' meat, maggot!"
Laughing Amanda sat sideways on the chair at the work bench. "We had an instructor like that at security specialisation training, always made me laugh when he got going."
Gabe grinned "Yeah Senior Chief Petty Officer LaGrone was a bit of a tool but he was a funny tool. Many of the things he taught me kept me alive during the bad years."
"LaGrone? doesn't ring a bell, must have been before my time." Amanda said, Gabe was quite a bit older than her. "Do you need my help with anything else?"
He shook his head "Negative Ensign I think I have it down." He looked at the crate and grinned "It's all of half an hours work."
"Oh come now," Amanda told him. "sooner I help you get finished sooner you can start your day off, I have nothing better to do."
He grinned "Ensign, fine a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life. This is therapy to me. Really now get out of my armoury, with all due respect ma'am."
Amanda put her hands up, "Alright, I know when I'm not wanted," She said chuckling slightly backing up towards the exit. "I'll be in the mess hall later if you want to join me."
He grinned but didn't look over his shoulder.
"Good copy on that Ensign. Maybe I'll share what's in the black locker. Now out."
