Amelia touched the two pips on her collar and grimaced inwardly to herself. She had spent almost twenty years in the Fleet working her way up the ranks to land that fourth pip and now she was busted back down, one step above an Ensign. The shuttle pilot called her name and she offered the PADD to him showing her transfer orders and her orders to board this shuttle that was headed to Star Base 54. Her route would take her about two weeks with stops at various installations and scheduled meet ups with starships along the way. That will mean if she's right she should have a few days of free time before her new assignment shows up at Star Base.

The Lieutenant looked at her then at the orders then back at her.

“Your a little old to be a JG arent you?” he asked as he handed the PADD back to Amelia.

“With all due respect Lieutenant, your a little old to be asking a woman about her age arent you?” she quipped as she walked by him and took a seat in the shuttle after stowing her bags.

The man paled slightly as he realized his faux pas and said nothing more as he continued to check in the other passengers. The doors slid shut as the last passenger entered the cabin and the two pilots began their preflight chatter. Soon the shuttle lifted off and Amelia felt that quick sinking feeling she came to associate with inertial dampers kicking from standby to active dampening. As the shuttle raised up headed to the edge of the atmosphere Amelia looked down on San Francisco the blue of the ocean blending in with the blue of the distant horizon. She looked up as the shuttle made it out of the atmosphere and saw the moon and all it's settlements. Between them and the moon she saw Star Base One in orbit around Earth and she nodded to herself. This was how an old soldier goes to die, under orders and waiting for retirement.
