Mission: The Silent Scream
Location: Science lab 2
Timeline: During Polaron Phantasms and Convergence

ON:

Deep in the bowels of one of the Wolff's science labs Ensign Watanabe and a few of the ships other scientists were bored, with nothing but this 'null space' to look at for the last week they had taken to bombarding a computer simulation of it with all sorts of different scientific applications.

"How about we vent a few dozen litres of warp plasma towards it?" Alya suggested.

Brendon entered the parameters into the simulation and ran it, after a few moments he shook his head. "No effect."

"How about igniting it afterwards, from a safe distance of course." Donald added knowing it would give a most interesting light show if nothing else.

"Quite the explosion but nothing else." Brendon said after the simulation had run its course.

Jameson said "If we had a spare warp core I would suggest through one away and making it explode next to it but I guess that in our case would mean a long walk home and max impulse even if it worked, so lets not even bother with it!

Chief Shaw thought a little longer, "How about Firing an antiproton beam at it?

After a few mins running that simulation where for the first time the wall of null space actually got stronger. Brendon said, "I guess not."

Over many hours the team threw everything that they could possibly think of at the simulation, all with little to no effect. Getting no positive results was infuriating for all scientists and this group were no different. They certainly had results, one that had made the wall stronger, others that had set off pretty sparks similar to fireworks and a few times it just set the wall on fire. Nothing yet had even opened a hole even one that was small enough for a particle of space dust to close. They had had their last two meals together in this lab waiting to find anything.

"How about a small graviton beam." Alya offered.

Brendon set the simulation for a small diameter graviton beam, he sat back in his chair as the simulation ran awaiting a no doubt negative result almost immediately.

A minute passed as the simulation ran and ran eventually throwing out an unexpected result, a small hole forming in the 'wall' of the tunnel.

"Well.... Looks like we might have something here." Brendon said quite astounded.

"It certainly is a start! Well done Ayla I wouldn't have thought to take that shot. We need a range of tests first like is it safe, is it stable because if it collapses as soon as we turn the beam off then it is dangerous. I for one don't particularly feel like be half here and half not because that usually means on fully dead carcass sliced in twain." Donald said with a smile that they finally had something.

"Well I'll keep this one running for a while then switch the beam off see if anything changes, you start running the variables." Brendon told Donald and Alya.

"Run with a more intense beam, with a wider radius, see if we can't make a hole big enough for us to get through." Shaw said suggesting several variables he'd thought about.

The science lab became a hive of activity as the team ran through a host of simulations all working quietly until results started slowing coming in.

Shaw sighed slightly "As soon as we turn the beam off the hole starts to slowly close."

"We don't have enough power to make a hole big enough for us." Alya added, "The power requirements grow exponentially as we go wider."

"How about we just focus on keeping the hole open once it's been made.
maybe we can find some other way of making the hole?"

"Run a simulation starting with a big enough hole already in the wall and fire a beam wide enough, intense enough to keep it open within our power capacity.

"We're still over power." Alya said smacking the desk in frustration.

"Re-configure the beam geometry, we only need a space about 90m by 220m, enough for a few meters to spare on all sides."

Brendon programmed the simulation again adding all the variables they'd discussed. "Ok, here we go."

Unconsciously holding their breath the team watched as the simulation ran, eventually the computer flashed up a 'simulation sucessful' message. it was another minute before anyone spoke. "Guess we should get Lt Edwards down here to take a look." Brendon said then tapped his combadge. =/\=Watanabe to Edwards, can you come to science lab 2, we've found something that looks quite interesting.=/\=

=/\=On my way Ensign I'll be there in a few minutes.=/\= Anthony said and started heading to the lab.
