Altair System

The Altair System comprises six planets that orbit the A7V blue star Altair (also known as Alpha Aquilae) in the Alpha Quadrant. It is located 16.8 light years from Earth in a strategically important area of space for the Federation. Humans began colonizing Altair VI in the early 22nd Century and now inhabit two additional planets in the system.

Archaeology has uncovered that the system was once inhabited by the Preservers and also had a connection to the Vegan Tyranny.

An interplanetary war between Altair VI and its colony Altair IV and Altair III during the 2260's nearly tore the system apart. The Federation intervened in 2267 and successfully negotiated a lasting peace. Part of that peace included the Federation helping to rebuild Altair IV, constructing the Central Hospital there as a premier medical research facility for the study of Altairian encephalitis and other diseases, especially mental diseases. Altair III remains dangerous and war-torn, but exports (especially the reputedly health-giving and restorative Altairian water) from Altair VI are rebuilding the system's prosperity.
