Altair VI is the last planet in the Altair System and the first that was colonized by Humans in the early 22nd Century. A Class M world, land mass covers sixty percent of the planet. Ruins were discovered shortly after the colony was established, indicating the Preservers once inhabited the planet (although much mystery still surrounds the sites).

Once established, the Altairan governing body went about forming colonies of their own on Altair III and Altair IV. The planet was the target of a Romulan attack in 2156 during the Earth-Romulan War, but was successfully defended. In 2244, an "intermittent" war erupted between Altair VI and Altair III, ending in devastation never before seen in the system. Tensions remained high for many years, resulting in Altair IV declaring its independence in 2267. This sparked a brief conflict that was ended by Federation intervention.

As early as 2150, the United Earth Space Probe Agency maintained port facilities here. Starfleet continues to operate facilities on the planet, along with excellent R&R services.

Altairian water is one of it more famous exports.
