Archanis Sector

The Archanis Sector is one of the main areas of space between the Federation and the Klingon Empire in the Beta Quadrant. It takes it's name from the Archanis System, the primary star system within the sector. The Ajilon System is also located within and is the Federation's sole foothold in the sector.

The sector was long regarded as Klingon territory, but came into dispute as the Federation pushed out it's boundaries during the 23rd Century. The issue was settled by the Treaty of Organia in 2267, and the Federation was allowed to annex part of the area. Given the strategic importance of the sector, numerous Federation starbases and outposts were established there. By late 2372, however, the Klingon Chancellor Gowron (under the urging of a changeling impersonating General Martok) demanded complete control over the sector be returned---one of the main reasons for the start of the Second Federation-Klingon War. When the Federation balked, he ended a tedious ceasefire and captured the entire sector.

The following year, at least one attempt to re-take the lost space by Starfleet occurred. The USS Trailblazer was one of several ships involved in hit-and-run raids on Klingon logistic convoys there towards the end of the conflict.

Once Gowron was killed and the Dominion's involvement in starting the war uncovered, the Klingons withdrew to the former treaty boundaries.
