Farians are a warp-capable humaniod species that call the ringed planet of Farius Prime home. They have the unfortunate reputation of being associated with the Orion Syndicate and other criminal organizations.

Personality & Physiology

Farians breath very much the same oxygen/nitrogen mixture as Humans and are physiologically very similar. Farians do have a distinctive ridge that runs from their nose up through their forehead. Natural hair color tends to run toward the darker colors, with redheads a treasured rarity. Their hair never grays or whitens and is difficult to color. Their skin tones, however, shade to the neutral or pale sides. Both sexes tend to grow a little taller than their human equivalents, and their metabolisms are slightly faster.

For centuries prior to making contact with the Federation, Farians were considered a very peaceful and philosophical people. They were a very open and accomodating race, eager to please and work cooperatively with other species. While their personalities can be as diverse as humans, typically Farians were friendly, adventurous, and hard-working. Since their planet was open to other species and trade, criminal elements and unsavory corporations have taken hold in nearly all aspects of Farian society. Many have found the lure of easy money, power, and noteriety too much to pass up. As such, they have come to be considered an unscrupulous and devious people by other species. Despite this, traditional Farians still cling to their values and beliefs in being a moral and upright race.

History & Society

The Federation came to know the Farians through Trill intermediates in the early years of the 23rd Century. Because of Farius Prime's location between the core worlds of the UFP and the Cardassian Union, it became a major hub in the trade routes to the Bajor and Kalandra sectors. The planet opened its arms to all species, and soon there was influx of Bolians, Dopterians, and Orions living amongst the native population. It was hoped that this diversity would prove beneficial to the Farian race; and while it has prospered, the planet has also become a haven for the more seedy peoples of the galaxy. During the 2360s, the Orion Syndicate especially took interest in the planet and went about setting up numerous illegal operations. They took full advantage of the Farian people's hospitality and liberal legal system to branch into almost all aspects of their society. The planet's crime rate is one of the highest of any warp-capable world.

Following on their heels came several Ferengi and Dopterian businesses with their sights set on the lucrative mining industry. The business practices of these private corporations were, at best, shady. In the last couple of decades, the Farians have tried to tighten regulations and pass stricter legislation but with little success. The Syndicate especially has its claws into Farian politics, and most other worlds consider the government too corrupt for effective leadership. Still, many galactic powers such as the Klingons, Cardassians, and Ferengi have embassies on the planet.

Gambling and prostitution are accepted vices on Farian worlds. Although illegal, both are well organized. Paper money is still used as currency here.

The Farian's planet-wide communications system is a series of com booths, similar to ancient Earth's "pay-phones". The planet's road system is divided into streets, and public transportation is in place.
