A Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is an temporary formation of ground based Marine forces and is used mainly for administration and logistical planning.

Marine Expeditionary Units usually consist of three or more battalions from a single or multiple regiments. Note that a single regiment can have battalions serving in multiple brigades. Marine Expeditionary Units are commanded by a Brigadier General or Major General and assisted by a headquarters, support and service (HQ, S&S) company under the command of a Major, Lieutenant Colonel or Colonel.

Naming convention

Marine Expeditionary Unit, are usually named after the Starfleet Task Group that they are associated with. As the names are "recycled" they often acquire nicknames to differentiate between active and retired brigades.

Organization

There is no text book organization for a MEU as each one is created specifically to meet the needs, demands and mission of the Task Group it is assisting. However there are several common characteristics such as the inclusion of all, or portions of; a Regiment of Engineering, Regiment of Signals, Medical Services (Medical Regiment) and Logisical Services (Logistics Regiment).
