A regiment is the largest, permanent formation used by the Starfleet Marine Corps (SFMC). The regimental system has been used my most of Earth's pre-space military forces and similar formations were used by several of the original signing planets of the Federation. Regiments are considered the most important unit in the Starfleet Marine Corps in terms of history, morale and esprit d' corps. Each SFMC regiment has a unique cap badge and can often trace their history to pre-space military forces. Often a new Marine will spend their entire career within one regiment.

Regiments are comprised of 1200+ Marines organized in at least three battalions as well as a headquarters, support and service (HQ, S&S) company. While most regiments limit the number of peacetime battalions to between three and five this number can be increased during war with the reserve or training battalions being mobilized as active battalions and new recruits filling the new battalions.

Regiments are commanded by a regimental colonel and assisted by a Sergeant Major, often referred to as the Regimental Sergeant Major.

Generally speaking regiments do no serve as detachments although an entire regiment might be temporarily garrisoned on a space station, thereby fulfilling much the same role.

Regiments have a designated Executive Officer, usually the senior most Battalion Commander.

Naming convention

Regiments use a numeric designation which is almost always linked with a historical or role nickname. Common nicknames include Rifles, Highlanders, Guard, Hussars, Cavalry, amongst Earth derived regiments. Examples include:

Command Squad, 1st Platoon, A "Howard's" Company, 1 Battalion, SFMC 7 Regiment, The 7th Cav

Squad One, 2nd "Blue" Platoon, B "Bravo" Company, 2 Battalion, SFMC 22 Regiment, The Royal 22e

Sniper Squad, 3rd "Recon" Platoon, E "Easy" Company, 4 Battalion, SFMC 95 Regiment, The Rifles

Organization

The textbook distribution of a regiment is at least two active battalions, one reserve or training regiment as well as a 128-man headquarters, support and service (HQ, S&S) company. The regimental colonel does not directly command a unit, although on paper it appears he commands the HQ, S&S company.

Each battalion is commanded by a lieutenant colonel while the day to day running of the HQ, S&S would fall to the company's next senior officer, usually a Major. The staff positions within a HQ, S&S are considered invaluable training for junior officers who wish to become general officers.

Generally speaking regimental colonels are not expected to lead their troops into battle, instead remaining as an overall commander to better evaluate intelligence, positions and thereby continually adapt strategy and tactics and give orders accordingly.

Although rank and role might vary slight a sample regiment would be organized along the following lines:

HQ, S&S Company
1 Colonel
1 Major (Company Commander)
126 staff officers, support NCOs
