Mutara Sector

The Mutara Sector, also referred to as the Genesis Sector is located inside Federation space near the Klingon border. The sector is filled with numerous stars, planets, and related phenomena (including the Mutara Nebula, until 2285) but nearly all are uninhabitable. The two major star systems are the Mutara System and the Ceti Alpha System. It is also home to Regula, a small planetoid home to a Federation science station.

The sector was forever changed in 2285, when Khan Noonien Singh and his Augments hijacked the USS Reliant and stole the Genesis Device. Triggering it in the Mutara Nebula, Singh managed to kill himself and his crew but not his intended target---Capt. James T. Kirk. The result was the formation of the Genesis Planet. Unsure of the planet's implications, the Federation restricted travel through the sector. Later that same year, a Klingon incursion resulted in a fight between Kruge's Bird-of-Prey and the USS Enterprise. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan; Star Trek III: The Search for Spock)
