Badge indicating successful completion of the Sapper course.

Sappers are Marines specially trained in demolitions and the sapper badge indicates that the Marine has completed a course of theory and practicals as well as having maintained a yearly refresher course and examination. Training includes using explosive devices both to destroy enemy equipment and emplacements as well as using shaped charges to gain access to building and ship’s compartments. Disabling and the safe destruction of explosives is also covered.

While any Marine is eligible to undertake Sapper training it is mandatory for Artificers, Grenadiers and members of the Regiment of Engineers. Most detachments will have at least one Marine qualified as a Sapper.

The Sapper badge is worn on the right sleeve 5cm above the cuff and is worn third in order of precedence of the four qualification badges.
