Mission: Negotiations and Apothecaries
Location: Bridge of the USS Wolff
Timeline: 19th Feb, 2395

ON:

Lieutenant Commander Radak stood on the bridge of the USS Wolff staring intently at the viewscreen. This mission was going to be a sticky situation. They would be dealing with opposing peoples whom they had very little information on. Neither populace were members of the Federation and largely unknown, and one of the species involved was even a First Contact situation. He had to admit to himself that he had never been part of a mission where there were so many layers.

They were on their way to the very edge of Federation space. In a very short amount of time they would be across the border and into Yatal space. Radak had never seen a Yatal. He wondered briefly what they would look like. Would they act strangely? Did they have any odd eating habits? He paced back and forth in front of the vacant captain's chair he should have been sitting in.

Radak had spent quite a bit of his career as a liaison officer. Running back and forth between a station and a planet. It would seem that these sorts of meetings would be easy for him. He had also spent some time aboard a ship that specifically handled some First Contact missions. Even though he had had these experiences, it didn't reassure him. The lack of information about these people, their dispute and even their level of technology. "Helm, when we reach the edge of Federation space, slow us to warp 5." He forced himself to sit again. Ships got jumped at borders. He didn't want anything trying to catch them across the border. "When we cross the border, I'd like a full scan of the area before we return to full warp."

Lieutenant Yuvek furrowed his brows at the XO's command. It was nearly impossible for an enemy vessel to ambush the ship if it was at high-warp. Slowing down to scan the area would give any nearby vessel to get a good scan on it and possibly attack. Regardless of his own hesitations, he had been given an order to carry out.

"Aye, sir," the Cardassian replied.

Lieutenant JG Antony Edwards was watching as the results of the scan came back in. "Commander Radak, There is nothing out here but the Federation marker buoys, Sir."

"Good. Good. I did not want anyone chasing us to our first contact with these people. All we need is to drag the trash along with us. Carry on," Radak said with a nod.

The next few light years passed smoothly until the ship reached the border of Yatal space and the tactical console beeped out an alert.

Jo's eyes responded to the flashing red light on her crescent-console display even before she heard the alert. Leaning over the display, she read what was there and was prepared to report it but, much to her annoyance, Sika spoke first.

It was more than the tactical console that was beeping. Everything from science stations to Sika's operations console were beeping, chirping, and humming like the summertime cicadas and crickets. It was Sika that jumped on the reporting the matter.

"Look alive," he said flatly, though the tone of his voice echoed concern. "We have a ship on sensors. It's traveling at low warp, but is on a direct heading with us. It's just within our sensors... still can't identify it's warp signature or design... yet," added Sika.

Radak nodded. "Let me know as soon as you can identify it." The Vulcan stood from his seat and took several steps toward the view screen. "Is it close enough to put on the viewer?"

A few seconds and taps of the console later and Edwards had it up on the view screen. "Yes Commander Radak, on screen is possible. I am working on the identification and warp signature."

Lieutenant Yuvek noticed the flurry of activity on sensors and tried to determine if any additional vessels were a part of this impromptu "welcoming party".

"Sir, should we begin evasive maneuvers?" the Cardassian Helmsman inquired while searching for possible nebula's or fields that could provide the vessel cover in the event a battle erupted.

"Are they powering weapons?" Radak asked. "I would like us to raise shields though. "We can still say hello with the shields up. When they are in hailing range, please do that as well."

Jo's fingers worked the tactical console she'd been spending so much time familiarizing herself with. Fleet displays were different and her role in the Marine Police had prepared her for just about everything but this.

"Raising shields now, Commander." she said, her accent thick. She watched as the status display of the Wolff on her screen was crowned with a circle of blue. "I'm not reading any shield or weapons signatures. Their actions aren't aggressive."

Anthony worked on the design, it had a long sleek nose and a wide tail, within the body or tail similar to the defiant class which this vessel was also similar to in size, had it’s nacelles or whatever this species called them were inside. There appeared to be no heavy armour. “Commander Radak by scientific analysis and deduction, Sir, I believe our tail to be a Yatal vessel.”

Radak nodded. "Very good, Lieutenant Edwards. Let's come to a stop and let them catch up to us. Communications, open a hailing frequency." He waited for the channel to be open before he began speaking.

Anthony tapped the console a few times before he said. "Open Commander Radak."

"This is Lieutenant Commander Radak, from the Federation vessel, Wolff. We greet the Yatal vessel. We were not expecting an escort," he said to the open channel, hoping that the other vessel would respond.

The Yatal ship gradually caught up and dropped out of warp several hundred kilometers off the Wolff's port side. "Dampris lie Wrenaouq Akalos..." It took a few seconds for the universal translator to catch up "....of the Na'rayya, the orders to escort you to meet our ambassador only came a short time ago."

"No problem," Radak replied casually. "We are more than willing to follow you. Thank you for the escort. Please lead the way and I will inform our Captain of our arrival."

"We should arrive in around six hours, it has been nice to fly straight without potential attack from Kurai ships, hopefully your involvement will make that permanent... Akalos out." The channel went dead and the viewscreen flicked back to showing the Yatal ship which swiftly turned around and after a few seconds jumped back to warp.

Radak sat back down in the chair. "Lieutenant Yuvek, match their speed and route, please. Lieutenant Commander Vaz, I would like a full tactical read out of the Yatal ship."

“Aye, Sir,” Lieutenant Yuvek responded as he once again brought power to the ships thrusters and began to quickly accelerate. Within moments the ship had entered warp and was maintaining its current speed of warp 2.

"The vessel has few armaments by our standards, Sir. Their war seems to have pushed them further on the weapons technology track than anything else," Jo responded from the tactical console. "They have basic shielding, fore and aft medium yield plasma cannons, and 2 forward and 1 aft torpedo launchers." Jo paused for a moment, working the console again. "Tactical sensors have no solid reading on the type of torpedoes the Yatal vessel possesses."

"Thank you. At least now we know. I believe that we still have them outgunned if need be. I am hoping that will not be on the agenda for today." He tapped his com badge. =/\=Captain, we have met a Yatal vessel. They are escorting us to their ambassador.=/\=

=/\=What's our Eta?=/\=

=/\=Six hours, Captain,=/\= Radak replied. =/\=At warp 2,=/\= he added. There was just a hint of sarcasm in his voice. =/\=They do have some weapons aboard, but nothing we cannot handle, just in case. I am sending copies of current scans to your PaDD.=/\=

=/\= Thank you Commander, also do a full sensor scan of the area and log anything if interest, if we can I'd like to do some exploring in these nearby systems after we have finished these negotiations. =/\=

=/\=We will do that, Captain. I will see you in the morning.=/\= Radak smiled a little. It would be slow going. There was no reason for them not to look around a little bit. "Lieutenant Edwards, let us get a full sensor sweep of the area, just to see what we can find."

"Already running them Commander Radak," Anthony said from science console on the bridge.

"Thank you. Let me know if you find anything unique or unusual. I have a feeling that this might be a long twelve hours," Radak replied.

"Your welcome, Commander I will let you know if there is anything unexpected," Anthony said.
