Mission:
The Silent Scream
Location: Counsellor’s office
ON:
Aiko Kiroshi had no beef with counselors. They did their job, she was pretty much an open book …. or was until her time on the Glory. Still she knew the routine and would cooperate with the counselor so that she could start her work. There was much that needed doing and this was just a step, a hurdle, to what needed to get done.
Summer was in her office she’d finished her last appointment and was just waiting for her next to arrive. Grabbing a PADD she prepared a page for notes.
Aiko was soon at the counselor's office ringing the chime. She hated these formalities but it was necessary. Admiral Higgens had suggested she see a counselor..when he pestered her she could say she did."
Summer looked towards the door. “Come in”
The doors parted and Kiroshi, Aiko walked in. She held up her PaDD and handed it to the counselor. "Reporting as ordered."
Smiling as the door opened Summer motioned Aiko to a seat. “You must be Lieutenant Kiroshi, please take a seat.”
"Okay then," Kiroshi sat down. "Alright, what do we need to do to get me cleared. I have an Engineering bay run by ninnies and I have to fix it."
“Hmm let’s see now... do you often call your staff derogatory names?” Summer looked at Kiroshi curiously.
"Of course not, if they're horrible I just transfer them out of my Engine room."
Summer gave a curious look. “And how do you determine whose horrible and who isn’t?”
"Their work ethic, evaluation, and the number of stupid questions they ask."
“Is that so?” Summer gave the Engineering Chief a raised eyebrow look. “So would you dissuade your staff against asking questions even if it clarified what they needed to know?”
"Not at all but there are some questions that will make me question their training. I pride myself in teaching my staff what they need to know but if they haven't learned at the Academy, and they haven't learned from me and they are still making mistakes when they hit my department then we gotta problem."
Summer nodded. “That’s fair enough, you know when there’s a problem and when there isn’t. All I’m asking is for you to give people a chance.”
"I always do. I just don't give second chances, it's not a personal opinion it's smart practice dealing with all things Engineering."
Summer nodded as she made notes on her PADD. “You’re someone whose very upfront with those you work with, do you worry about offending people?”
"Not particularly. At this age we are what we are and if we can't take the truth then we should not be in Starfleet. I won't risk the lives of the crew on inept Engineers, something your captain doesn't understand."
Summer nodded. “You are Chief it’s your department and as you said lives are at stake. All I’m suggesting is a little... tact with your people. That way you won’t end up with a pile of complaints on the CO’s desk.”
She snorted, "I don't know when that's not been an issue. I'm..." She sat back rubbing the bridge of her nose. "I'm not a diplomat. I'm not used to sugar sprinkles I tell it like it is."
Summer nodded as she listened. “You don’t have to be a diplomat, just have a little patience. If crew aren’t trained to your standards then get them trained! Who better to know what they need than you.”
"Yes well there is a problem in that. I don't train those I deem untrainable."
Summer nodded. “Well at that point it’s a decision between yourself and the Captain.”
"More so the XO in my experience. The XO's handle personnel more then the CO."
“That’s true” Summer nodded. “So tell me more about you, files only say so much. I want to know the real you.”
Aiko Sighed, "Well what would you like to know?" She really wasn't good about talking about her sad excuse for a life.
“What are you comfortable telling me?” Summer smiled warmly as she looked at Aiko.
Aiko shrugged. "I don't know. This will work better if I have direction so you're gonna have to ask." She grinned. "I know, frustrating but that's the kind of patient I am!"
“Fair enough” Summer grinned. “Tell me about your Academy time, how did you get along with the other students there?”
"I don't know. I have to say that Academy life was...good. I liked being there. I wasn't a joiner per say but it was a time of development for me." Aiko rubbed her eyes. "How about this...how about I get a pass now and you schedule a follow up?"
Summer smiled “I think I’ve held you up long enough, I’m happy to approve your psych evaluation. All I ask is you consider the feelings of those you work with, even if they do annoy you.”
She gave a nod. "Thanks."
Summer nodded. “My door is always open so if you should need to talk about anything feel free to drop by.”
She gave a nod. "Thanks Counselor." She waited to get the confirmation PaDD and then she was ready to head to work, there was plenty of it to keep her busy.
