1,300 words; about a 7 minute read
Mission:
A marathon not a sprint
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: During/after what lies ahead pt3
Triage deciding after only a very quick examination who would get priority on treatment, who could wait and who was already too injured to be saved, that was Cameron's job as wounded slowly began to arrive from around the ship. Sometimes individually, sometimes the more wounded were carried in by the lesser wounded. It was not an enjoyable task but it was an essential one.
Plasma burn to the arm, given painkillers and told to sit down over there, will give them a dermal generator when I get the chance.
Patient carried in over shoulders of a Vulcan with a facial injury, not breathing, Cpr attempted to no effect, put on biobed 3 for treatment; Vulcan told to wait.
Aeryn was being kept busy with the worst of the patients. Doing her best to get through her patients as fast as she could she looked around with a sigh. "Computer activate the EMH." she waited for the ship's EMH to appear. "We have incoming wounded, and I have multiple patients waiting for surgery, I need an extra pair of hands!" this was one time she was glad for the holographic doctor.
Evelyn was busy with the more minor wounds, getting through her patients at a good rate meant she'd be able to help the more severely wounded as they came in. "There you go" she smiled warmly. "Don't overdo anything with that arm, it won't be at full strength for a day or two."
James Arundel was already working an osteo-regenerator on the broken ribs of a struggling Ensign. He'd already stabilised his oxygen to make breathing easier despite the injury to the lung, and the painkiller would help with the worst of it, but the instinctive panic that came from straining to breathe fully was difficult to overcome. "Almost done," he assured calmly, but he was already glancing across the Sickbay, jumping ahead to what was next.
So far the number of casualties had been somewhat light and luckily there had been no reported fatalities yet, as a couple more lightly injured came in the comm system in sickbay came to life. =/\= Bridge to Sickbay, you have a critical casualty inbound from the Marathon.=/\= the voice of Nakata announced.
Arundel glanced upward at the warning, taking a sharp breath as he finished up the tissue regeneration on his patient. =/\= Acknowledged, =/\= he assured firmly, checking the readouts scrolling across the screen. He was stable enough, and his oxygen levels had shown significant recovery. "I'm discharging you to your quarters," he nodded and helped his patient back to his feet. "But you're under orders to maintain bedrest for at least two hours, and come back if your breathing gets worse or the pain returns."
As if perfectly timed the just vacated biobed was bathed in a transporter sparkle as the battered from of Ensign Turell rematerialised onto it. If not for the piece of bone sticking out of her right arm and the blood staining the uniform around it the woman looked peacefully asleep.
"Amanda," Cameron called out immediately recognising the woman, she rushed over and set the biobed to diagnostic mode. "I told you she has a tendency to get hurt." She said to James.
"This is her?" James watched the woman with visible concern before looking to the readouts. He didn't quite stop the whistle escaping at the carnage her body had gone through. It was a minor miracle she was still alive. "Let's get her blood count up," he was already reaching for a hypospray to load. "And get this internal bleeding under control."
"Not seeing any weapon marks on her, all looks like blunt force trauma." Cameron said as she examined Amanda and the results of the biobed diagnostic, Amanda was a good hand to hand fighter as well as marksman. "Someone must have beaten her pretty good to wind up like this." She headed to the blood synthesizer to set it to manufacture A+ blood for her.
Finishing off her patient Eve made her way over. “Do you need any help?” She offered a calm and friendly smile.
"This internal bleeding will need surgery, if you can keep an eye on her vitals to keep her stabilised, I'll go in," James was already setting an autosuture and subdermal scalpel onto the tray next to him. Of course, 'going in' was an antiquated phrase for most surgeries that could be performed without even opening a patient up.
Eve nodded as she set up ready to assist. “Ready when you are. Vitals are currently holding at a base level.”
Cameron came back a few moments later carrying a few more medical tools they were going to need. "Computer erect sterilisation field around biobed eight and surgical bay." In a flash the gently shimmering field encased an area of sickbay, nothing but air from the life support system could come in, nothing could come out.
James set up the monitors to show what was going on under the skin. With non invasive surgery, he would be entirely reliant on the imaging to be his guide. He made sure to stabilise the area first before setting to work on repairing the tissue that was responsible for the life-threatening bleed. He opted for the microsuture, taking his time to work with the precision required. Only when he was convinced the bleed had been stemmed did he set to work on healing the bones and tissue damage around it.
"This is one hell of a break," Cameron remarked as they worked, a few centuries ago a break this complex would take years to recover from if they recovered at all.
"She must have taken quite the beating," James shook his head with concern, frowning as he worked on knitting and building the bone with the osteo-regenerator. "She has a skull fracture too, can one of you make sure that she's not developing a brain contusion or oedema..."
"Checking now." Cameron took a more precise medical probe and slowly scanned Amanda's head. "There's a minute amount of swelling around her hippocampus but there's no other signs."
“Readings looking okay at the moment” Ellie added to the conversation. “Blood pressure stable.”
Aeryn looked around from where she had just finished with her patient, to say the sickbay staff were working admirably was an understatement, with that she moved on to the next patient who needed her.
It was at least a quarter of an hour later before James was happy to step back from Amanda's side and catch his breath, quite literally. The internal bleeding had been stopped, the breaks and fractures healed and the majority of muscle damage seen to. She was still littered with more minor injuries, but she was safe for the time being. "I think she's stabilised enough to move on, although I'd prefer to keep her here if we can spare the bed, keep an eye on her."
"Amanda is a fighter," Cameron told him as she stepped back too but didn't take her eyes off the bio readouts, . "She'll be up and running in no time, probably with a good story to tell."
James nodded as he let out a long breath, taking another look at Amanda with concern etched lines in his features. He finally pushed himself away, knowing he needed to move on to whoever was now top of the triage list. It rankled though, not being able to completely finish the job he'd started. He made a mental note to come back and check on her later as he moved to the side of an officer that was covered in too many burns.
