872 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: A marathon not a sprint
Location: Sickbay, USS Wolff
Timeline: MD08 - 1845 hours

The last of the biobeds had been cleared. Monitors pulsed quietly. The hum of Sickbay, once sharp with urgency, had dulled into a steady, manageable rhythm. It was time.

Aelira stepped out from her office and into the open ward, sleeves still rolled neatly below her elbows. She scanned the space once, then called out with calm clarity, “Could I have your attention, please.”

Her voice didn’t need to rise. It carried the kind of composure that gently but effectively gathered focus. One by one, members of the medical team paused their tasks — nurses, medics, junior physicians — turning towards her, some leaning on counters, others resting PADDs in anticipation.

They had worked beside her already, in crisis, with little ceremony and no formalities. Now came the moment to step beyond necessity — to begin building something steadier.

Aelira waited until the last eyes had found her, then folded her hands lightly in front of her. She didn’t smile widely, but her gaze held warmth, intent, and quiet assurance.

“Alright,” she began, hands loosely folded, eyes scanning the gathered staff. “Thank you. I know things have been… intense. Jumping in mid-crisis isn’t how I’d normally introduce myself, but we don’t always get the luxury of timing.”

Her voice was gentle, her tone open. “I’m Aelira Valan’thir. You’ve probably gathered that already — or at least worked it out somewhere between the shouting and the burnt uniforms.”

That earned a faint smile, subtle but genuine.

“I’ve spent a long time in medicine. Some of it with Starfleet, some of it… not. I was raised to believe healing is more than fixing what’s broken. It’s listening. It’s understanding what’s beneath the surface. It’s making space — even in chaos — for stillness.”

A small pause.

“I’m not here to turn everything upside down. Just to work alongside you, and make sure we’re ready for whatever walks — or stumbles — through those doors next.”

Aelira’s gaze drifted briefly around the group again, thoughtful. “If there’s anything you want to ask… or just say — this is a good time. You don’t need to stand on ceremony with me. Speak freely, or not at all. I’ll be here either way.”

James watched on from the sidelines, his hands still busy as he slotted vials into analysers or the recycling box accordingly. His tall frame remained stoic in its habitual military posture, but friends would notice the small details that gave away his fatigue; eyes that weren't quite as bright as usual, tension in his strong jaw. A relentless run of surgery had left him drained, and he was looking forward to a strong drink. And not the caffeinated kind. He remained silent; a recent addition to the crew himself, he was still getting the measure of this new troupe.

Aeryn was glad that the panic was over with. “I have to agree, everyone worked beyond their limits, and I have to say I think we all make a wonderful team.”

Evelyn nodded in agreement. “We all pulled together, and we always will.” She smiled warmly.

Aelira offered a quiet nod to Aeryn and Evelyn, a flicker of warmth threading through her gaze. “Then we’ve already begun well,” she said simply. “Working beyond limits isn’t easy — but doing it together, with care, says more than I ever could with a speech.”

She glanced around the room, her voice calm but sincere. “We’ll have quieter days, and harder ones. What matters is that we meet both the same way — with each other.”

Dr Sol blinked, watching on from where he cleansed his hands for the third time. It still bemused him. Of course, he'd heard such human sentiments before...anything was possible so long as they stuck together. It was highly illogical. Life and death situations were far too complex to apply such a notion to. He supposed it brought them comfort to think so.

Aelira inclined her head gently toward Summer, her expression softening. “Stronger together,” she echoed, not as a slogan, but as something quietly earned. “Whether you were here or not, you’re part of it now. That matters.”

She looked once more around the room — at those cleaning up, at those lingering in the silence after long hours — and let the pause settle naturally. “Alright,” she said finally, with a faint breath of wryness. “No more speeches from me today. Go get some rest if you can. Or at least find a cup of something warm that doesn’t come from a hypospray.”

There was no dismissal in her tone — only care, and a subtle permission to exhale. Whatever came next, they would face it as one.

Aeryn nodded and smiled before getting back to the bit of clearing up she was doing.

Eve smiled before turning to Aeryn. “Here, let me help you finish up. The sooner we all get finished, the sooner we can put our feet up.”
