Mission:
Crisis at Zeta-294
Location: Deck 1- Bridge
Timeline: Md04
A few busy days full of repair work for most, a few days of relaxing for others and the Wolff was looking almost pristine again, temporary hull patches had been permanently fixed, the entire shield generator system ripped out and replaced, burnt out warp coils refitted.
Taliserra was resting in her chair at her desk in the ready room when the console built into the desk broadcast an alert somewhat startling the partially asleep woman, she rubbed her eyes for a moment before checking the console, the only thing showing was a message marked urgent.
From: Commodore Indra Moore
To: Captain Tigran, USS Wolff
Uncharted asteroid passing between Federation and Cardassian border at co-ordinates 147891 at time of broadcast, border probe preliminary scans inconclusive, request you investigate, chart asteroid course and composition.
She tapped her commbadge.=/\="Tigran to bridge"=/\=
On the bridge, Slattery let out a soft breath. He had seen an urgent message directly to the Captain's console. So he had expected to hear from here. "Bridge here."
=/\="What's the status of our repairs?"=/\=
"We're mostly done, Captain," Slattery said as he brought up the recent status reports from Engineering and Operations. "Got some power fluctuations from the warp core that is causing minor issues. We also have some cosmetic issues, and structural weakness around jefferies tube alpha-delta-five."
=/\= Is there anything that cannot be completed while we're underway? we have orders. =/\=
"Of course," Slattery said and tapped his combadge. "Bridge to Engineering, asked for an update on repairs for departure. Ideally what we can do underway rather than being here."
"Most of the smaller repairs we can do on the move," Marie stated. "But some things need the drydock as we don't have the facilities in space."
"Prioritising those items how long do you need before we can get underway?" Taliserra asked.
"Give me a couple of hours at most?" Marie shrugged hoping that was an acceptable answer.
=/\= Then make preparations to get underway, and call the senior staff to the bridge when we're ready... And have Cadet Oaks there too. Tigran out=/\=
From the bridge, as he observed officers at consoles, he turned sharply when heard his name, Rusty tried to contain his excitement. Clearly his class assignment was going to have him more involved, up closer to the senior staff and Captain Tigran.
==== 3 Hours later ====
Marie turned around from huge master systems display console that lined the back of the bridge. The MSD allowed her to see an overall 'picture' of the interior systems of the Wolff and monitor them simultaneously from one place. "All systems are now on green status Captain," she reported. "But ease the new warp coils in a little, we don't want to burn them out. They'll need running in a little."
As Marie said this, Anthony came out of the Turbolift to take Science back from Brendon Watanabe. "Thank you, Ensign, you're relieved." He said as he took command of the Main Science station. After working his console, he was satisfied. Science was back up and running in optimal conditions. Turning to the centre seat and said to Lieutenant Commander Slattery. "We're all green here as well, Commander."
"Ops is in total agreement with both Engineering and Science," Brendan said after he had relieved Lieutenant Binea from the Ops console and ran a check on the ships' systems. He was quite impressed with Binea's skill and attention to detail. It was apparent to him that she was ready to have assumed the position of Chief of Operations herself.
"Bah..." On her way past, Ash gave a doubtful sound to the suggestion of running the engine in slowly. But the pilot was just being playful on her way down to her station, settling into her chair as she brought up the status reports. "She looks ready and raring to go..."
Aelira arrived, the turbolift doors sliding open with a soft hiss that barely cut through the low hum of the bridge. She didn’t announce herself. She never did. Instead, she took in the room at a glance — the settled rhythm of stations coming back online, the subtle shift in posture that came when a ship found her feet again.
She moved to the edge of the command well, choosing a seat slightly back from the main consoles where she could see faces as easily as read displays. Hands folded loosely in her lap, posture relaxed but attentive, she became still in that way medics often did once the crisis passed — present, listening, ready if needed.
She inclined her head briefly toward Slattery in quiet acknowledgement, then settled in, content to observe unless called on. The bridge didn’t need a healer right now — just witnesses to the ship moving forward again.
Hadir stepped onto the bridge and exchanged hushed conversation with the duty officer at the Security Station. After he received report he took his station. All systems were in standby and the ship stood ready. He waited as one did in the calm before the storm.
With most of the senior officers there Taliserra decided it was time to begin proceedings, "Lieutenant Prenar, is the ship secure?"
"The ship is secure Captain. We stand at green alert and all systems are at your command. All stations report ready." Hadir responded from his station.
Taliserra looked to her left. "Lieutenant Breguet, core status?"
"Online and holding steady." Marie replied simply. "But remember, run the engines in first." she added.
Taliserra then addressed the last of her new senior officers. "Lieutenant Dernah, retract all moorings and external couplings."
"Moorings and external couplings are retracted, Captian. I've also disengaged the external inertial dampeners. And the parking brake, as well," Brendan said with a smile.
"Good," Taliserra smiled slightly. "Alert the dockmaster and any nearby vessels. Ash, lets get going."
"Consider it done, Captain," and Brendan turned back to his console and began to carry out Captain Tigran's orders.
Ash slid her fingers over the controls as soon as she got the green across the board. She had enough of these under her belt now to be more relaxed about the proceedings. She took it steady though, not wanting to push her luck as the ship eased away from the cradle, gliding effortlessly out into the black.
"Set course zero-nine-five mark ten." Taliserra instructed, then glanced to her left at the new chief engineer and recalled her 'run in a little' comment. "When we're clear of the system go to warp 4."
Ash plotted the course in...then cast a glance to the side, but not quite looking back at the Captain. It would take them pretty darn close to the Cardassian border. She kept the thought to herself though, simply acknowledging her order.
Cadet Oaks, however, did not have the seasoning of Ash. He did not know every star chart out there, but he had a rough idea of the area they were heading. Unlike, Ash, he did not keep his mouth shut. "Captain, doesn't that take us close to the Cardassian border?"
Taliserra turned slightly to adress the Cadet. "That's correct Cadet, close enough they'll likely be very curious what we're up to."
"I would expect so, Captain. They tend to be suspicious" replied the Cadet.
"Almost clear," Ash gave the heads up, double checking the route that was plotted before readying the ship for the jump. "Heading to warp....now..." her fingertips slid across the panel, bringing it to life before the stars on the viewscreen stretched into the familiar streaks of light.
With the ship underway Taliserra took a deep breath, "There's very little information to work with about our next assignment so I'll spare us all the full formal briefing arrangements." She began. "A previously uncharted asteroid has come into sensor range near our border with the Cardassians. We've been tasked with charting it."
Anthony took a deep breath and said under in "Not Asteroids again." Then the word A registered in his brain and he asked. "An uncharted asteroid? Singular Captain? I suppose it is better than a nebula after the last time we got too close to one."
Taliserra almost laughed, the Wolffs' last encounter with asteroids was quite explosive. "Yes, a singular quite large asteroid, starfleet Cartography want to know where it came from, where it's going and what it's made of."
"Ah, so investigating a rogue, then? Seriously, what could go wrong..." Anthony said, but didn't feel that confident about it. At least the space around the area is supposed to be friendly, though the admiralty did say that about the region of space we were in when we were on escort duty for the Marathon.
“A rogue huh, sounds fun” Summer added as she stepped onto the bridge and walked across to her seat. “It’s something different to do.”
"A chance to actually explore and undertake science, the Wolff is an explorer type ship after all." Taliserra remarked.
Anthony laughed and said, "We all know that, Captain, but I think the Admiralty has us confused with a Defiant dreadnought the last few we have been sent on! Let's hope they have our class worked out."
"I'm looking forward to my first mission on this class of ships," Brendan said quite enthusiastically.
"Just don't bump into it. If you damage the hull, you're fixing it." Marie huffed from the Engineering station. "And be careful of its trail, those 'micro' segments. Yeah, not so micro when they're up close!"
Ash gave a slight snort from helm, shaking her head slightly with disbelief at the words. "I'll be sure to keep that in mind," she replied brightly, her voice almost sing song in nature, making it impossible to tell whether it was sincere or sarcastic.
"Investigating an asteroid sounds rather safe," noted Rusty. "Maybe if we are lucky it will be something interesting, but not too interesting. I love a good comfortable science outing."
"That sounds a little too cautious coming from a cadet," Brendan said with a light laugh speaking to Cadet Oaks. "And last time I checked, we were a science vessel."
Could have fooled me thought Cadet Oaks. "Respectfully, Ma'am, I am not sure when the last time the Wolff had a simple science mission."
"After the events of the last few months I will not argue with a comfortable simple scientific assignment," Taliserra remarked then raised her voice slightly to address all the officers present. "Let's take this hopefully more quiet period to get some drills performed. Damage control, Boarding defence, various medical problems."
"I'll get right on that, Captain," Brendan replied.
Cadet Oaks cleared his throat. "Where would you like me, Captain?"
Marie nodded in agreement, damage control drills would be perfect to give her a chance to see how her engineering crew reacts.
Taliserra turned slightly in her chair to address her Xo, "When Lieutenant Breguet has decided we've run the engines in enough go to warp 7, if we get any update on the location of the rogue from the border stations adjust course appropriately Commander."
"Yes, Captain," Jack said and gave a small nod, meeting her eyes for a moment before he looked ahead again. He had faith in their Chief Engineer to get them to warp 7 sooner rather than later.
"I'll be in the ready room if you need me." Taliserra announced and stood from her chair, "Lieutenant Wyse and Valan'thir, you can head back to your posts. Cadet Oaks, join me in here in one hour." She smiled at them as she crossed the bridge and entered her ready room.
